Book Exchange 2.0

Most students hate purchasing and selling textbooks each semester. They’re grossly over-priced, and when you go to sell them back, a book that cost you $200 is now magically worth $40, yet sold for $200. It doesn’t make much sense, but most of us do it twice a year. In order to combat this, the University Park Undergraduate Association implemented the student Book Exchange program, where students sell and buy books from other Penn State students for no additional costs or surcharges.

The plan has been around for almost two years, but the UPUA has been working on some spiffy updates: a quick search option, a more advanced search option, and a profile page to keep track of your order history. The new version will be similar to Amazon in its functionality.

Regulations of Unpaid Internships

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Labor released a document clarifying the roles of for-profit employers and colleges in students' unpaid internships. The document includes a six-part test from the Fair Labor Standards Act (which derives from a 1947 Supreme Court decision involving railroad-company trainees). If the following six factors are not met, then an employment relationship exists under the FLSA and minimum wage and overtime provisions must be given to the intern.

UPUA Meeting: No Unruly Mob, But Progress!

Last night's University Park Undergraduate Association meeting, perhaps the shortest of the semester, opened up with a few words from President Christian Ragland. He mentioned that the UPUA won an Award from the State College Borough Council, he was working on putting together a diversity seminar, and that he was also hoping to garner support from other university student council president to show encouragement for Joseph Igbineweka, a student president from Chico State University in California that was stabbed in a hate crime.
