This is the first installment of a five-part series that will take a look back at the most memorable Penn State-Ohio State games since the Nittany Lions joined the Big Ten in 1993. Hopefully this serves as both an informative and entertaining way to get you pumped up for Saturday. Each day, we will provide a short recap of the selected game, and brief interviews with a few fans who were in attendance. Today, the 2001 contest in which the Nittany Lions beat the Buckeyes 29-27, is featured.
Penn State's 38-14 blowout victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes last night at Kinnick Stadium earned the Nittany Lions some additional votes in the latest AP Top 25 Poll. They remain unranked, but received 18 votes, up from the one vote they were given the past two weeks.
A dominant performance from start to finish. It is difficult to come up with a better way to describe what transpired at Kinnick Stadium tonight. When it was over, the scoreboard showed a 38-14 victory for Penn State. Those numbers show a blowout victory for the Nittany Lions (5-2, 3-0) over the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-3, 2-1), and yet, they still do not tell just how much of a smackdown it was.
In anticipation of what is sure to be a hostile environment at Kinnick Stadium tonight when the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-0) host the Penn State Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-0), University of Iowa Student Government (UISG) sent a mass email to all Iowa students Friday afternoon encouraging good sportsmanship and no booing when the Nittany Lions take the field. UISG president Nichols Pottebaum talked to us to explain the reasoning and timing behind the email.
The date was October 9, 1999 and most current members of the Penn State Football team were in their early years of elementary school when the Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-0) last defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-0) in Kinnick Stadium. While these players have only made one or two visits, they remember it well-- the screaming fans, the cold weather, and ultimately, the disappointing end result. Tomorrow night, they will try to change that.
