As Hurricane Sandy ripped through areas of the Northeast -- specifically New York and New Jersey -- State College remained largely unscathed. Leading up to the storm, students and residents stocked up on essential supplies like flashlights, food, and malt liquor. It would all be for naught, and even though Penn State cancelled classes for the first time in five years on Monday afternoon, conditions would never reach the levels the most people expected.

A small fire broke out in the kitchen at Irving's bagel café at about 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. Local firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and blocked off a section of College Avenue for over 30 minutes.

State College is a magnet for former conservative presidential candidates. On Saturday afternoon, Governor Rick Perry of Texas will campaign at the Victory Center of the Centre County Republican Party. GOP candidate for the US Senate, Tom Smith, will also be in attendance.

An everyday chore got a little interesting for Chris Hershey on Sunday night when an injured coyote decided to walk into his apartment building.

Hurricane Sandy, or the #Frankenstorm, is expected to hit State College beginning Monday night into Tuesday morning. According to State College-based Accuweather, weather conditions in State College and Central Pennsylvania deteriorate throughout Monday and will worsen sometime between Monday night and Tuesday. Effects of Sandy will continue through Wednesday.

State College feels like it's our own safe little bubble. There's a reason that we're comfortable gallivanting around downtown at 2 a.m. while moderately inebriated. Even females, scantily clad as they're often seen to be, seem content stumbling home alone for several blocks. But maybe they shouldn't be. Since the beginning of the semester, less than two months ago, eleven sexual assaults have been reported to the State College Police Department.
