John Cappelletti is probably the best player to ever set foot on the Beaver Stadium field. He's the only Nittany Lion that has won the Heisman Trophy. He was the best player on an undefeated 12-0 team in 1973 that Joe Paterno has called the best team he ever coached, a team that should've had a shot at the national championship that season. It's fitting that Cappelletti would also be the first Penn State football player to have his number retired.
After a slow start, the Penn State offense eventually came alive on Saturday afternoon's home opener at Beaver Stadium as the Nittany Lions defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles 45-7.
Good morning from Beaver Stadium where the Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0) are set to face the Eastern Michigan Eagles (1-0) in the home opener. Penn State won its first game of the season last week against Syracuse while the Eagles topped Howard. Eastern Michigan is led by head coach Ron English, the former defensive coordinator of Michigan and Louisville. Coach English will be looking to bounce back from a tough loss in against the Nittany Lions in 2011. Bill O'Brien will face the Eagles for the first time in his career and will try to add on to his team's two dominant performances against Eastern Michigan during the Paterno era.
Penn State Football has announced that any Penn State student (regardless of campus) can purchase up to two student tickets for $40 each at the Medlar Field Box Office, starting at 8 a.m.
John Bacon, the Michigan professor who authored the book Fourth and Long: The Fight for the Soul of College Football, will visit Penn State on September 12.
Tailgate of the Year: The Search for College Football's Best Tailgate is on a quest to find the most impressive Penn State tailgate. Started by recent Penn State grad Dan Levy, the competition is in its first year and will be piloted in Happy Valley before he hopes to take it national.
