Last night, the start of election season was evident at the UPUA general assembly meeting. The average non-media student crowd of two duodecupled as many candidates and their campaign staff filed in to 302 HUB to watch the wheels of democracy in motion. In fact, there was barely an empty seat in the house, as the Sixth Assembly of the UPUA winds down into its final weeks.
It's rare that a television show stands the test of time, but that's exactly what Sesame Street has done for over four decades. The legendary children's show has won eight Grammys and 118 Emmys, and has been a staple in family living rooms for generations. Last night, those lovable characters from 123 Sesame Street came to life at the Bryce Jordan Center with Sesame Street Live. Ponter/Kristobak wasn't the only ticket to hold an introductory campaign meeting in Willard last night. Directly across the hall, Courtney Lennartz and Katelyn Mullen also held a kick off meeting to reveal their 11-page platform.
Evan Ponter and Ryan Kristobak unveiled their three pillar platform to a group of students last night. The platform includes key issues including transparancy, an area the candidates think the UPUA need improvement in. Both candidates referenced their ties to on-campus activism in their introduction, and said that they wanted to reduce student apathy, making the student body “a force to be reckoned with.”
UPUA election season, the time each year when the undergraduates at Penn State get to decide who will be the faces of their student government, is upon us. Elections are something that Onward State has covered with the utmost ferocity since our inception. While we like to poke fun at those making the decisions during the year, elections season is a time for hope to spring eternal that the next year may be than the last, and we pride ourselves on helping our readers come to informed decisions on who they think is best equipped to help UPUA make that leap forward. This year, two of Onward State's staff members--Evan Ponter and Ryan Kristobak--have stepped up to the challenge of being the voice of the students in the Seventh Assembly, competing for the presidency alongside the tickets of current UPUA vice president Courtney Lennartz and Katelyn Mullen as well as current UPUA press secretary Maggie Quinn and Gina Feghali. Because of this potential perceived conflict of interest, we feel the need to address concerns regarding how we will proceed with elections coverage this year.
For some, the remaining 339 days until THON Weekend 2013 may seem like an eternity. But, for this year’s most motivated THON leaders, there is no time to be wasted. The time for first step of the exciting planning process of the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, the selection of an Overall Chairperson, has come.
