Going Geek: PSU Tweets

goinggeekEarlier today we posted about the discovery of a Twitter account possessed by none other than the Penn State Creamery. While it remains to be seen exactly what the Creamery plans to do with this new technology (“Hey, so we’re still here. And we still sell ice cream…”), there is no doubt that Twitter has begun permeating the mainstream as more individuals and organizations find new and interesting ways to utilize the unique technology, especially here at Penn State. On said Creamery post, commenter “j” asked us if we’d be kind enough to compile a list of Penn State twits (tweeters? twitter-folk?), so what better way to kick off the new “Going Geek” column than with a primer of the essential places to go for 140 characters worth of Penn State?

  • There is, of course, the most obvious one: @PSUNittanyLions. While not an official PSU account, it’s owned by SportyTweets.com, a resource of Pro and Collegiate sports tweets.
  • If you’re looking for more “official” Penn State tweets, there are plenty of departments on campus and in the area with their own accounts. @PSUSportsMuseum is always offering up info on cool events and Penn State sports info. As we’ve reported before, @PSULibs is the Penn State University Libraries’ Twitter, offering some cool insight into the workings of that place you spend most of your nights at the end of each semester. There’s also @PSUORP, the Office for Research Protections, @PSU_IE, the Industrial Engineering Department, @PennStateLive, the official Penn State Newswire, and @PSUWorldCampus for Penn State Online and Distance Education.

More, after the break!

  • If you’re looking for arts on campus, there’s @FullAmmoImprov, Penn State’s premiere improv comedy group, and @NoRefundTheatre, a student community theater org (Full disclosure, I’m involved in both groups), and the student radio station is plugged in @TheLion907fm. The Palmer Museum’s also got one, @PalmerMuseum. HappyValley.com keeps you updated with news and info from the community with @HappyValleyPSU. If you can’t get to a paper on campus, The Daily Collegian’s got you covered @DailyCollegian.
  • And there’s all sorts of interesting personalities making their way to Twitter, too, like @JayPaterno, @SHCDean (Schreyer Honors College Dean Christian Brady), and even @WillardPreacher.

Of course, you can find us on Twitter @OnwardState. Got some we missed? Got something else you’d like to see covered in future installments of Going Geek? Let us know in the comments!

10 Questions With Tom, PSU “Wheel” Rep

A few weeks ago, Eli let us know about Drew Magathan, the Temple student who cleaned up on Wheel of Fortune with over $100,000, and lamented the lack of Penn State representation on the show. That’s when we were thrilled to find out (through commenter Kyle – thanks Kyle!) that we actually did have a […]
