B&N College Bookstores Offer Rentals, But Not Here

After seeing textbook rentals become wildly popular with online services like Chegg, Barnes and Noble is trying to get in on the game. Since our official bookstore in the HUB is a Barnes and Noble-run bookstore, I was hoping that we'd get the chance to take advantage of the savings that come with textbook rentals.

Turns out we can't.

Of the around 25 participating Barnes and Noble University bookstores, Penn State is not on the list. Our rivals to the west, Ohio State, offering Barnes and Noble textbook rentals, as are those Gamecocks from down at South Carolina.

I'd imagine that Barnes and Noble will be looking to expand their textbook rental program to other schools. Given the fact that we're such a big school, it is likely our official B&N bookstore will be participating in the near future.

Riding the Coattails of Success

Ever say to yourself, "gee I wish the Penn State College Democrats had a blog!"? Well first off, I'm sorry that's what you are thinking about, and secondly, today is your lucky day.

Yes, it sounds like something out of a fairy tale, something too good to be true, but it's reality! This is what greets freedom lovers as they visit the brand-spanking new blog of the PSU College Democrats.

With general interest in politics dropping off after the 2008 election, and with the College Republicans luring in members with promises of food (and tax cuts), the College Democrats are looking to emulate the success of the Obama campaign. Since technology being a must-have weapon in any campaign or political organization, it seems only logical that the College Dems would try to spread the good word through the internet.

Student Involvement Fair

The Spring Student Involvement Fair opened today in HUB Alumni Hall. It will be open again from 11 AM to 4 PM tomorrow.

Overheard on Twitter: UPUA Victory!

Sure, we didn't get the Highlands Frat Route, but extended hours on the White Loop is every drunkard's dream! High-Five Gavin!

Wayne Hoffman to Put a Spell on Happy Valley

Ah, syllabus week. It comes around but once a semester. A time to pretend our classes or GPA don't matter. A time when the library doesn’t even exist. Most importantly, a time where we try to cram in as much non-academic “stuff” as we possibly can.

On the hunt for something to do? Penn State’s Student Programming Association, that’s SPA for all of you acronym lovers, (idk, my bff Jill?) has reeled world famous mentalist and illusionist Wayne Hoffman into Happy Valley. Wayne has been rated one of the top ten entertainers in his field, not to mention his appearance on countless television shows (Ask your mom - she saw him on The Ellen DeGeneres Show).

Students Likely to Drink in 2010

After reading a recent roundup of drinking data, I have made the above proclamation. That's right, you heard it here first.

To understand Penn State's notorious drinking habits, the university and the county have created "Penn State's Partnership - Campus and Community United Against Dangerous Drinking."

Each year, the PSPCCUADD CCUADD Partnership publishes the Annual Assessment Report, which strives to track changes in the levels and consequences of drinking. The new 2009 edition can be found here.
