Few things excite me as much as times when the university, an institution whose endurance is a point of pride, bumps into the ever-advancing force of technology. Sometimes, it comes in large, naval-looking vessels like the Millennium Science Building… but other times, Penn State runs into the best that the digital age has to offer in less academic settings.

Take, for instance, Penn State’s awesome presence on Reddit, inspiration of at least one recent Onward State post.

I’m not writing this post today just to basely laud Reddit though. I’m writing it for Penn State itself — I’m writing it #ForTheGlory. You see, one of Reddit’s summer interns came up with three great contests to promote the subreddits of universities across the country, and in the process get a few schools some much-deserved Internet fame. I think Penn State could fare well in any one of them. The contests are described below.

Prize 1: Best Percentage Growth
Traffic growth (50%), activity growth (40%), and subscriber growth (10%).
  • School colors on reddit front page for a day with mascot as reddit alien
  • Large box of mascot designed alien stickers
  • Large poster customized to your school
  • Large box of school’s subreddit QR code stickers
  • Possible meetup hosted at your school by a reddit admin(s).
Prize 2: Best Absolute Growth
Growth in number of subscribers to college subreddit in ratio to the school’s undergrad enrollment.
  • School colors on reddit front page for a day with mascot as reddit alien
  • Large box of mascot designed alien stickers
  • Large box of school’s subreddit QR code stickers
  • Possible meetup hosted at your school by a reddit admin(s).
Prize 3: Admin Choice Award
Will be given to the college subreddit community that the reddit admins enjoy the most. This can be through design, content, activity or even just one amazing post that will make us all laugh.
  • School colors on reddit front page for a day with mascot as reddit alien
  • Medium box of mascot designed alien stickers
  • Medium box of school’s subreddit QR code stickers
  • Possible meetup hosted at your school by a reddit admin(s).

Which one do you think Penn State has the best chance of winning? What are your ideas for promoting the contest? Does this call for a joint Subreddit/Onward State tweet-up? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Penn State and the Process of Life

To paraphrase Mark Twain: The reports of higher education’s death have been an exaggeration. American universities produce more research and relevant knowledge for the world at large than any other institutions I know of. Tuition may be too damn high, but over the long-run, undergraduate degrees are definitely worth the cost. But Penn State could be so much more. It used to be, I think.
