[Live Blog] Penn State vs. Ohio State

Good evening Penn State fans! The lights are on here at Beaver Stadium, where Penn State is set to take on No. 13 Ohio State. After a 4-0 start to the season, the Nittany Lions are coming off two straight losses, and hope to avoid three straight defeats for the first time since 2004. Ohio State is 5-1 and riding a four-game winning streak. We will have updates throughout the game on this page, including game analysis, photos, and more. Here’s the media information you’ll need, and here’s our staff’s game predictions.  

OT: Joey Bosa bull rushes Hackenberg and takes him down, ending the game. Ohio State wins 31-24.

OT: Fourth down here. This is the ball game. Penn State must convert or else it’s game over.

OT: Touchdown, J.T. Barrett. Penn State must score on this next possession.

OT: Barrett takes a read option all the way to the five yard line, making it first and goal. Barrett scores on the following play.

OT: TOUCHDOWN BILL BELTON. Belton takes a direct snap from the wildcat formation and punches it in.

OT: Hamilton another huge grab, this time on the two yard line! Akeel Lynch runs for a yard, and it will be third and one on the goal line.

OT: DaeSean Hamilton again! Big catch over the middle, brings up third and one. Hackenberg dives forward for the first down!

OT: Penn State begins on offense, and Akeel Lynch takes a big run down the far sideline, but it’s negated by a holding penalty.

End of 4th quarter:

0:13 4Q: It’s all tied up here in Beaver Stadium! Ficken nails the 31-yarder. Ohio State takes a knee, and we’re headed to overtime!

0:14 4Q: Ficken on to try and tie this game up. Ohio State calls a timeout as expected, and gives Ficken some time to think about the upcoming kick. This will be a 31 yard attempt.

0:24 4Q: Hamilton hauls in the first down! Nittany Lions within striking distance now. Jesse James adds four yards and takes Penn State to the 14 yard line.

0:58 4Q: Ten seconds added to the gamecock, but Joey Bosa pummels Hackenberg on the next play. 2nd and 17, followed by a seven yard pickup, with 15 additional yards tacked on thanks to an Ohio State penalty.

1:10 4Q: Hackenberg’s pass nearly picked off, but the Nittany Lions stay alive. Huge first down by Geno Lewis, and the Nittany Lions approaching field goal range.

2:42 4Q: First down picked up by Hackenberg by way of a sneak. Nittany Lions are putting together a nice drive. Hackenberg again picks up the first on the ground for Penn State.

5:17 4Q: Nyeem Wartman stuffs Barrett, who’s carry went for no gain. Hull brings down Elliott to bring up a crucial third down. Mike Hull records his 17th and 18th tackles on the night. Fourth down here for the Buckeyes.

5:27 4Q: Incomplete on third down will force the Nittany Lions to once again punt. Hackenberg missed Blacknall on that last throw.

6:34 4Q: Hackenberg nearly intercepted, but the pass falls incomplete. Pass interference called on the play which moves the chains for the Nittany Lions. FIrst down Penn State.

8:10 4Q: No Donovan Smith for the Nittany Lions, which could be troublesome.

8:10 4Q: Loud “We Are” chants echoing throughout the stadium now. Where else would you rather be?

8:25 4Q: Nittany Lions force Ohio State to punt, but the Buckeyes down it on the one yard line.

Here’s a look at the grab by Blacknall that put the Nittany Lions to within three.

11:00 4Q: Ohio State will begin the drive on the 37 yard line.

11:08 4Q: TOUCHDOWN! Hackenberg launches a bomb to Saeed Blacknall, who comes up big in the corner of the end zone!

12:08 4Q: First down Akeel Lynch! Nittany Lions are driving here. Hackenberg’s next pass complete to Saeed Blacknall for three yards.

12:49 4Q: Third and very long here for the Nittany Lions after an incomplete pass. The following pass was dropped by Jesse James, but a roughing the passer call gives the Nittany Lions new life with a first down.

13:17 4Q: Saeed Blacknall motors up the far sideline for a big gain, but there’s a flag on the play. It’s a hold, and the chains move back.

13:30 4Q: Mike Hull picks off Barrett around the 40! Big drive here for Penn State.

14:02 4Q: Another sack from Adolpus Washington, who is having a great game for the Buckeyes. Nittany Lions forced to punt, and it travels way short. Punting has been an issue all night for the Nittany Lions.

It’s now or never for Penn State, and they’ll need some help from DaeSean Hamilton.

1:28 3Q: Back to back sacks by Carl Nassib and Brandon Bell respectively pins the Buckeyes deep in their own territory.

2:15 3Q: Hackenberg picked off by Ohio State. The route was jumped, but not his best throw of the night.

3:06 3Q: First down caught by DaeSean Hamilton, who is having himself a night.

3:59 3Q: Hackenberg hits Geno Lewis on a bomb along the sideline! First down Penn State!

5:14 3Q: Anthony Zettel swats a J.T. Barrett pass attempt, bringing on the Ohio State field goal unit. The 41-yard attempt goes wide right!

5:19 3Q: Some confusion by the offense leads to a timeout called by Urban Meyer, Ohio State’s first of the second half.

6:22 3Q: First down picked up by Ohio State’s Jalin Marshall on a sweep to the left.

7:35 3Q: J.T. Barrett picks up the first down, but another deep ball is broken up by the Nittany Lions on the very next play.

7:57 3Q: Nyeem Wartman slams the hammer down on backup quarterback Cardale Jones, and will bring up fourth and short for the Buckeyes.

8:48 3Q: Ohio State slowly moving the chains on the ground, as they enter Nittany Lion territory. A potential touchdown was broken up by Penn State safety Marcus Allen. Third down Ohio State.

10:11 3Q: Hackenberg hits Mike Gesicki on the same pass he was intercepted on earlier, this time for a completion. Misses wide on the next throw, and sacked on third down. The Nittany Lions will bring their punt team on.

11:01 3Q: Sweet Caroline echoes throughout the stadium as fans sing along.

11:39 3Q: Pass complete, but goes for negative yardage! Ohio State is on to punt.

12:49 3Q: Elliott scampers for a first down, but is drilled by Mike Hull on the next play. A Trevor Williams stop brings up 3rd and 8 for the Buckeyes.

13:37 3Q: The stadium is alive and momentum is on Penn State’s side after Zettel’s pick six.

13:55 3Q: Pick six by Anthony Zettel! Touchdown Nittany Lions! A 40 yard return by Zettle gets the Lions on the board. 17-7 Ohio State.

End 1st half: 17-0 Ohio State.

0:04 2Q: Ohio State takes a knee, ending the first half.

0:30 2Q: Another keeper for Barrett brings up 3rd and 4, and is brought down by Anthony Zettel on the following play. Fourth down for the Buckeyes with four seconds remaining in the half.

1:23 2Q: Geno Lewis is lit up across the middle, and forces the Nittany Lions to punt yet again. Boos are raining down on the offense.

2:04 2Q: Bill Belton is swallowed up by Ohio State’s Joshua Perry, bringing up a third and long situation for Penn State.

3:35 2Q: Hamilton fumbles, but it’s recovered by Chris Godwin. Hamilton rebounds with a 10 yard grab, making it 1st and 10 for the Nittany Lions.

3:58 2Q: Ohio State drives the field and scores off of a one-yard pass to Jeff Heuerman. 17-0 Buckeyes.

7:38 2Q: Austin Johnson and C.J. Olaniyan stuff Elliott short of the first! The Buckeyes will bring their punt team on. Della Valle fields it on the 10 yard line, deep in Nittany Lion territory. The offense will need to march 90 yards.

9:05 2Q: Five yard pickup by Elliott, followed by a three yard gain that brings up third and short.

10:22 2Q: Bill Belton takes a run way outside and loses two yards on third and one. Gulla on to punt. The ball will be downed at the 28 yard line.

11:07 2Q: Mr. Barnes has made his presence felt tonight, coming up big with the sack on third and long.

12:04 2Q: Yet another Buckeye penalty makes it 3rd and 15. Barrett is sacked by Deion Barnes! Buckeyes on to attempt the field goal, which goes through. 10-0 Ohio State.

12:08 2Q: Four yard penalty by the Nittany Lions makes it 2nd and 11 for Ohio State. The pass broken up by Jordan Lucas, and forces third and long for the Buckeyes!

12:08 2Q: Timeout Ohio State, their second of the first half.

13:01 2Q: Barrett nearly sacked, but evades the tackle and is brought down by Mike Hull at the line of scrimmage. Second down Ohio State. A false start on the next play will make it 2nd and 15 for the Buckeyes.

13:28 2Q: Elliot picks up nine yards on a handoff, followed by a J.T. Barrett keeper that went for no gain. First down by Barrett after another keeper on the next play.

0:10 1Q: A swing pass gives Ohio State another first down well into Penn State territory. That is the end of the first quarter.

1:26 1Q: Sloppy tackling by the Nittany Lions, as Barrett has been able to pick up big chunks of yardage, including a first down on third and short.

3:07 1Q: J.T. Barrett takes a quarterback keeper up the middle for a big gain. First down Ohio State.

3:47 1Q: A pass intended for Hamilton gets batted and falls incomplete, forcing a fourth down. Gulla’s punt goes to the nine yard line, pinning the Buckeyes deep in their own territory.

4:36 1Q: Akeel Lynch takes a handoff nine yards for another Penn State first down! The Nittany Lions are gaining momentum.

5:23 1Q: Hackenberg hits Hamilton on a screen, and Hamilton takes it up the sideline for a 16 yard gain. First down Penn State.

6:49 1Q: 4th and 1 for Ohio State! The short run was stuffed by Deion Barnes, and the Buckeyes punt. Penn State will begin at its own 16 yard line.

8:50 1Q: DaeSean Hamilton comes up just short of the first down marker, which makes it 4th and 1. Chris Gulla back to punt. His punt only travels 32 yards, giving Ohio State very solid starting field position.

10:10 1Q: Grant Haley takes the kickoff 22 yards, Bill Belton gains four yards on the ensuing play.

10:15 1Q: First down by Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott. Touchdown by Elliott on the very next play. 7-0 Buckeyes.

11:28 1Q: Timeout Ohio State. Crowd noise is definitely playing a factor.

11:30 1Q: The noise is deafening in Beaver Stadium, and it’s clearly effecting the Ohio State offense as there is confusion in the Buckeye backfield. J.T. Barrett gives Ohio State a first down three plays later.

13:07 1Q: Christian Hackenberg is intercepted by Ohio State, but the play is under review. The play will stand. 1st and 10 Ohio State at the Penn State 39 yard line.

14:16 1Q: A ten yard pickup by Bill Belton off of a screen gives the Nittany Lions a first down, but he is swallowed up on the following play. First down by DaeSean Hamilton right after.

14:55 1Q: Return man Grant Haley had an opening, but slips at the 13 yard line on the kick return. Zach Zwinak is down with an injury.

15:00 1Q: Ohio State has won the toss and elected to defer, the Nittany Lions will get the ball to start the first half.

Pregame: 

Boos rain down on the opposing Ohio State Buckeyes as they run onto the field.

The Nittany Lions have taken the field!

Nine minutes until kickoff! Are you ready for Penn State football?

The Blue Band is on the field, and the Drum Major nailed the flip! The alma mater is being played through the speakers.

The special teams unit is on the field for warmups!

As the stands continue to fill, the anticipation begins to mount. Nothing but white can be seen.

DaeSean Hamilton seems ready to take on the Buckeyes.
