The Best IM Sports Team Names
Spring is finally here and with warmer weather comes the return of outdoor intramural sports. In light of their recent return, we talked with Intramural Events Assistant Justin Frear to find some of the best IM team names students have created.
“A lot of students make teams after popular sports headlines. We also see a lot based off other sports teams,” Frear said. These archetypes include names like Manchest Hair, United City, and Unreal Madrid.
Other students got creative with the names of Penn State athletes. Teams were named Blair For Once, after Penn State running back Blair Thomas, or The Bolden and Beautiful, after quarterback Rob Bolden.
Some teams chose to avoid sports references altogether and instead stick to a strict Penn State theme. Different variations of 409, Average JoePas, Pinchot Hall, and Pitchers Special — especially when the Cafe 210 West patio is full — have been popular team names.
Most teams choose to be creative, but some teams try to toe the line in terms of what names the IM office will accept. Teams that named themselves Unprotected Sacks and Floor Play certainly did just that.
“Volleyball teams have all kind of innuendos in their names,” Frear said. “Soccer is where they really try to push the limit.”
Although the IM office encourages students to be funny and unique with their names, there are things they don’t feel comfortable publishing online in the IM sports schedule. Names like Multiple Scoregasms that cross the line too far usually don’t get accepted.
“Teams have started using Urban Dictionary when creating names. This means we have to research to figure out what they mean before we post them online. We can’t post everything,” Frear explained.
With so many teams playing in each sport, there are bound to be repeated names, but the IM office doesn’t force either team to choose a new name in these cases.
“We don’t make them change, we just put the last name of the captain on the team so they know what schedule they should be looking at,” Frear said. “We know what names are popular, so we offer them the opportunity to change, but we don’t force them to.”
The spring IM sports season is just beginning, but students have all summer to brainstorm their team names for next year. When in doubt, consult the internet.
