Happy Buns Ice Cream Donuts Coming To State College

Update Friday, Jan. 26: The ice cream donuts will be like donuts filled with ice cream, Happy Buns owner Ohm Kongtang told StateCollege.com.

“It gets put into a machine that fuses the donut and the ice cream together, where it warms the donut up so you have a nice warm bun and the ice cream stays cold in the middle,” Kongtang said.

If all goes well, he hopes to open the shop in time for THON Weekend (February 16-18).

Original story: Happy Buns ice cream donuts is opening a storefront in downtown State College. Signs in the windows, which you can see below, indicate the shop is coming soon. A permit in the window says the space is being renovated to change its use for the incoming business.

The shop is part of the Greenwich Court Complex on College Ave. and is located on the lower level right next to Big Bowl. Steps down to Happy Buns are near Penn Kebab between Envy and McLanahan’s.

It’s not totally clear whether Happy Buns will sell ice cream sandwiches with donuts as the cookie, cone-shaped donuts filled with ice cream, or some other variation of ice cream donuts. Either way, my imagination is running wild, and I’m here for it.

State College has seen a rare influx of donut shops in the past year, as Peace, Love, and Little Donuts opened in August and Duck Donuts announced plans to open a shop on Fraser Street. None of the Happy Buns social media pages indicate an exact opening date, and the shop’s website isn’t live yet. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
