IFC To Pilot Shortened New Member Process

Penn State’s Interfraternity Council will pilot a shortened new member process for the next two years, fraternity chapter presidents decided Wednesday night.

The current new member process is six weeks long, as required by Penn State under Greek life reforms that have been put in place over the last two years. The new process will last only four weeks.

“We believe that this will be an effective change for our community, and lead to more positive new member and fraternity experiences for future students,” the IFC executive board said in a statement.

The four-week process will take effect during the fall 2019 semester and remain in place for two years. At the end of the pilot period, the practice is set to be re-evaluated by that year’s IFC executive board and chapter presidents.

Recruitment for IFC fraternities typically includes an educational information session, zone days, open recruitment, bid extension, and bid acceptance.

Students must have earned 14 credit hours at Penn State, meet a minimum 2.5 cumulative Penn State GPA, be enrolled full time, and not be subject to any pending or active conduct violations or sanctions to be eligible for fraternity or sorority recruitment.
