Staff Picks: Other Songs We Want Old Main’s Chimes To Play

Every 15 minutes on the nose, Penn State’s campus is serenaded by the ringing of Old Main’s chimes. During the week, students’ ears are met with a generic bell ring, while the weekend brings the prideful tune of “Hail To The Lion.”

That’s all fun and good. But what if we could just change it up for a day? What would you choose? Gameday favorites? Top hits? A good throwback?

Inspired by a particular TikTok from a creative Clemson student, our staff discussed which songs Old Main should consider adding to its playlist.

Mira DiBattiste: ‘Zombie Nation‘ — Kernkraft 400

Old Main absolutely needs to play “Zombie Nation.” It’s a cult classic on gamedays and there’s not a single person on campus who doesn’t know it by heart. I think hearing this song on a crisp fall Saturday morning would really just get me going for a good football game. It’d definitely get me psyched for exams, too.

Frankie Marzano: ‘Love Story‘ — Taylor Swift

First of all, you’re lying to yourself if you don’t think old Taylor Swift is top-tier music. Next, imagine this: You’re walking across Old Main lawn at 9:58 a.m. on a chilly Tuesday. The bell is about to ring (yes, it rings at 9:59, but that’s a whole other topic of discussion), and you hear the chorus of “Love Story” play throughout campus. That should give you the chills. Enough said, baby.

Rico Gore: ‘Amazing Grace‘ — Celtic Woman

I feel it would help the Willard Preacher get back to his roots. We’re also all residing in Sin City 2.0.

Trae Morgan-White: ‘Take On Me‘ — A-ha

Perhaps this is a safe choice, but I must admit “Take On Me” would be the perfect upbeat jam to hear from Old Main. I mean, it’s literally the 1980s’ staple to pop music. Just imagine hearing that catchy, recognizable riff every few minutes. All we need is a pencil-sketch music video set inside of Old Main and someone to butcher the song’s chorus in public to complete the scene.

Will Pegler: ‘Fire Burning‘ — Sean Kingston

At the end of the day, we’re all just trying to get the vibes up around campus. That’s exactly what this Sean Kingston classic will do. I truly can’t think of another song I’d want to hear more while walking to class.

Somebody call 911, because Old Main Lawn just became a dance floor.

Matt DiSanto: ‘Here Comes The Sun‘ — The Beatles

As the temperature begins to dip and leaves begin to fall, every Penn Stater knows the State College tundra is quickly approaching. And when it’s 10 below freezing and you haven’t seen the sun in a week, you’d probably like to remember what its warmth feels like.

Lucky for you, George Harrison’s magnum opus would do just that. Its cheery melody and opening acoustic riff never fail to cheer me up and put a smile on my face. I bet it’d sound great on the chimes, too.

Rory Pelella: ‘Feathered Indians,’ Tyler Childers

Don’t sleep on Childers. This classic song is an absolute bop and stands out as one of the greatest cornhole songs of all time.

So why not start feeling sentimental on the walk to class by hearing this sweet tune come from Old Main? It will take you back to the good ol’ days when crowds could gather outside Beaver Stadium and make you feel like you’re tailgating…for class.

Dana Nunemacher: ‘WAP,’ by Cardi B featuring Megan Thee Stallion

Do I even need to explain?
