[Photo Story] Penn State From ‘A’ To ‘Z’

Deep into fall, where the time for taking in the sights that fall foliage offers has passed and the weather gets more brisk, it can sometimes feel like it’s difficult to find things around campus to get excited about. Everything can start to feel boring, drab, and even a bit sad.

As temperatures dip and fall foliage falls, Penn State’s campus can get pretty dreary toward the end of the fall semester. Before you know it, everything can start to feel boring, drab, and even a little sad.

However, there’s something great, interesting, or happy in every corner of campus. We sent our visual staff out to showcase Penn State from “A” to “Z,” and hopefully, you’ll find something that brings a smile to your face, too.

A — Arboretum

Michael Tauriello | Onward State

Was there ever a doubt? Even in the more dormant parts of the season, the Arboretum will always wow its visitors and be an excellent spot for all to relax.

B — Beaver Stadium

Alysa Rubin | Onward State

Penn State’s football season has gotten off to a rocky start, but that will never stop the stadium from looking beautiful.

C — Creamery

Ryan Parsons | Onward State

No matter how sad or burnt out you may be feeling, a pint of Creamery ice cream is sure to cheer you up.

D — Dairy Farm

Erin Sullivan | Onward State

Not far from Penn State’s campus itself are the university’s dairy barns, home to 500 of the most care-free, nonchalant cows you’ve ever seen.

E — East Parking Deck At Sunset

Annie Kubiak | Onward State

Few things on this list beat out watching the sun set on Mount Nittany from what is debatably the best parking deck on campus.

F — Fish

Lindsay Tagliere | Onward State

The HUB fish never fail to calm folks walking by with their quiet demeanor and their vibrant patterns.

G — Gazebo

Erin Sullivan | Onward State

This gazebo, found near the University House, is a neat little nook that gives off a homey vibe, even on the coldest days.

H — High School Musical Stairs

Michael Tauriello | Onward State

Even with social distancing and masks in place, folks still find ways to stick to the status quo and convene at the steps to hang out or get work done.

I — IST Bridge

Michael Tauriello | Onward State

Who knew crossing over Atherton Street could be so graceful? Watching traffic pass below for a little while can calm one down with ease.

J — Jukebox

Ryan Parsons | Onward State

Blasting some good tunes is always a good way to feel a little bit better!

K — Kicking Around a Soccer Ball

Shannon Smith | Onward State

One key to feeling good? Physical activity! Kicking the ball of the most popular sport on the planet around is one way to do it.

L — Lemonade

Annie Kubiak | Onward State

You thirsty? The sweetest lemonade on the planet, courtesy of the Creamery, can help with that.

M — Messages In Windows

Lindsay Tagliere | Onward State

Admit it, sometimes you just need to stop to read a sign that’s in a window. Some messages make you laugh while others, like this one, are encouraging.

N — Nittany Lion Shrine

Erin Sullivan | Onward State

The Symbol of Our Best is bound to make anyone feel good, rain or shine!

O — Old Main at Night

Michael Tauriello | Onward State

On a dark night, it’s always comforting to see such a beautiful building provide such a bright beacon of light.

P — Pattee & Paterno Libraries

Alysa Rubin | Onward State

It sure does feel good to have such a beautiful set of libraries on campus to study in. But which side’s the front?

Q — Quack

Ryan Parsons | Onward State

The ducks (and turtles!) in the Alumni Pond are always there to keep you company. It’s a great place to enjoy the fresh air and hang out with some animals if you’re feeling down.

R — Reading Outside

Shannon Smith | Onward State

Warm weather in State College recently has prompted students to get out and relax while it’s still around.

S — Squirrels

Annie Kubiak | Onward State

Penn State squirrels are, simply put, built differently. They’re so friendly and can put a smile on anyone’s face…except when they get just a bit too close.

T — THON

Lindsay Tagliere | Onward State

Raising money For The Kids will put nearly anyone in a good mood. We dance in 99!

U — University House Pond

Erin Sullivan | Onward State

The pond outside of the University House is one of the more unknown spots at Penn State, but it’s always refreshing to see the campus’s only natural body of water.

V — Verne M. Willaman Gateway To The Sciences

Michael Tauriello | Onward State

The Gateway to the Sciences, better known as the Science Bridge, is much like the IST Bridge. There’s something about standing above things that pass by that makes you feel all-powerful.

W — West Halls Courtyard

Alysa Rubin | Onward State

Each residence area on campus has their sights, but the symmetry of the buildings around West Halls gives off the most aesthetically pleasing vibe of all.

X — X-Mas Tree

Ryan Parsons | Onward State

It’s almost the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas time! Many of the trees on Penn State’s lush campus are reminiscent of one you might put ornaments on in your living room. Hot chocolate, family time, and “A Christmas Story” re-runs are right around the corner.

Y – Yallah Taco

Shannon Smith | Onward State

I mean, really, has someone ever told you that a King Kong burrito didn’t make them feel good?

Z — Zip-up Hoodies

Annie Kubiak | Onward State

The weather may still be uncharacteristically warm, but soon enough it’ll be time to try to stay warm in zip-up hoodies.
