Staff Picks: How To Spend Your Wellness Day

Our first wellness day is upon us, folks.

In lieu of a spring break, Penn State opted to replace the week-long relief period with three days of cancelled classes. Each day has a theme dedicated to promoting wellness and wellbeing in the Penn State community.

That said, our staff doesn’t plan on doing anything out of the ordinary during this wellness day. Here’s a look at what we (and likely many other Penn State students) are up to today.

Acacia Aster Broder: Sticking To The Norms (For A Comm Student)

I’m going to transcribe interviews, do an interview, do some homework, and walk my dogs.

Alysa Rubin: Sleeping In

A day that I don’t have to wake up for class is a day I will spend sleeping in. College life is pretty busy (even in a pandemic) and I need to catch all the Zs I can get.

Anna Wiggins: Packing

I will be using this wellness day as an opportunity to get started on packing. Students who live on-campus, such as myself, will be returning throughout the week, and I definitely have not started. As someone who gets very stressed out from packing, I’m going to be spending this wellness day getting everything all ready a few days in advance to return to campus, so I’m not going crazy the night before I move back in.

Colleen Nersten: Embracing The Day

Unlike most folks, I’m pretty stoked about the wellness day. I’m fortunate that it falls right after I took two exams, so I don’t have the stress of school weighing me down. It’s easy to use the day off to catch up on studying, but that’s only going to bite you in the ass in the future and leave you feeling burnt out. I’ll be spending my wellness day catching up on sleep, treating myself to a very large Crust & Crumb coffee, watching YouTube from my bed, and hopefully going on a hike. I think everyone should go out of their way to do an activity they enjoy or treat themselves. Of course, spring break would be much more ideal, but you gotta take what you can get and make the most of it. Complaining isn’t going to change a thing.

Dana Nunemacher: Treating Myself

Tomorrow morning, I will be waking up early and going to work. This is something I typically do almost every morning. I really love my job, so it’s not like it’s a bad day. After work, is when the real fun starts. Typically I rush from work to log into class. On my wellness day though, I will not be rushing home to go to class. Instead, maybe I will treat myself to a Dunkin’ and Target trip. Perhaps, I will take a nap or watch a movie. My wellness day is a day full of possibilities, but you can bet I’ll be treating myself like the queen I am.

Mackenzie Cullen: Blogging

A wise person once said, “I don’t sleep, I just blog!” Just because it’s a wellness day doesn’t mean the blog grind stops. I have a post due for this lovely site we call Onward State tonight that should take me 30 to 45 minutes to finish. But because I have a small no attention span and am a consistent procrastinator, it will take me the entire day to write. So much for self-care on a wellness day.

Mira DiBattiste: Snowboarding

Even though I have work due the day after my wellness day (which means I can’t fully enjoy my wellness day), I’m deciding to take the afternoon to head to Tussey Mountain to snowboard! I started learning how to snowboard last year and since I’m still not very good, I’m taking my wellness day to get better at a sport I really enjoy.

Trae Morgan-White: Cranking Out Some Work

You know how professors usually give you assignments to work on before Thanksgiving break or spring break? Wellness days are treated the same way. With that being said, I’ll be spending my days finishing homework due a week from now. That’s the perfectionist in me. That’s also the “I want to graduate this semester” in me. I’ll probably add in buffalo wings and blast Rihanna songs for the “wellness” part.
