Staff Picks: Best Smoothie In State College

Summer has arrived!

Well, not quite. State College experienced a lovely 50 degrees on Wednesday, and after a frigid past few weeks, Penn Staters got to take off a few layers and enjoy the sun…and melting snow.

In honor of this ~heatwave~, our staff rounded up some of its favorite spots to grab smoothies in State College. So sit back, relax, and bask in the brief, fleeting sunlight with one of these smoothies in hand.

Alysa Rubin: Irving’s

Irving’s has been my favorite smoothie from the moment I walked up from its basement after my Onward State interview. With a wide variety of fun flavors to choose from, Irving’s has you covered for whatever flavor you’re craving. Personally, my favorite smoothie is the Joe Papaya. The rich coconut coupled with papaya takes me out of frigid State College and right to a beach — exactly the pick-me-up I need when my mood goes cold. Although they’re a bit pricey, I’m always willing to splurge on a smoothie when I’m really in the mood.

Mackenna Yount: Saxby’s

My smoothie pick is the “Vacay All Day” smoothie from Saxby’s. It has mango (my favorite fruit), pineapple, coconut, and strawberry in it. It 100% makes me feel like I should be sitting in a hammock on the beach with big sunglasses and a floppy hat. It’s a go-to quick breakfast or mid-afternoon snack for me and never fails to hit the spot. It also looks super cool because of the strawberry puree swirled in. Go get yourself one and take a “vacay.”

Anna Wiggins: Playa Bowls

Playa Bowls specializes in all of your smoothie bowl needs, so it makes sense that it would also make a killer smoothie. Playa has a seemingly endless selection of smoothies that come in nearly every color. Personally, I’m a simple gal who enjoys a good, simple strawberry and banana smoothie, but the “Açai Energy” adds some brightness to an already-delicious combo. Playa can be a little pricey, so this smoothie is a great treat for an oddly warm day in the middle of winter.

Matt DiSanto: Shake Smart

Shakes? As a smoothie pick? Blashphemous!

OK, relax. The Shake Smart that recently opened in the White Building also has smoothies, and really good ones, too. Last fall, I was quite fond of a custom fruit smoothie made with apple juice, banana, and strawberry. It was quite refreshing, and a boost of protein powder made me feel like I was drinking something moderately healthy.

Although $6 for one smoothie probably isn’t in many college students’ budgets, Shake Smart does accept LionCash. Cool off on a warm day by spending mom and dad’s money!
