Penn State Football’s Joseph Johnson III Enters NCAA Transfer Portal

Penn State football cornerback Joseph Johnson III has entered the transfer portal. Johnson confirmed his decision via Twitter Tuesday morning.

“Even though it was short, I enjoyed my time at Penn State…the coaches and the staff did there best to treat me like family and I felt that,” Johnson wrote.

The Richmond, Virginia native has one season at cornerback under his belt in Happy Valley. He committed to the Nittany Lions’ recruiting class of 2020 back in July 2019 as a three-star prospect. After a productive career at Life Christian Academy in Virginia, Johnson didn’t see the field for Penn State this season.

If Johnson does eventually find a new home through the portal, the Nittany Lions will still have a lot of depth at cornerback this season. Joey Porter Jr., Tariq Castro-Fields, and Keaton Ellis have all proven their abilities, while Kalen King and Johnny Dixon are both shaping up to be stars at the position through spring ball.

Johnson is now the third player from Penn State’s strong 2020 class to enter the portal. Quarterback Micah Bowens, a former three-star recruit out of Las Vegas, transferred to Oklahoma this past January. Defensive lineman Brandon Taylor also entered the portal in September 2020.
