Staff Picks: Which Penn Stater Should Announce An NFL Draft Pick?

It’s draft day, baby!

The 2021 NFL Draft is set to open at 8 p.m. Thursday. Over the next three days, 259 players will hear their names called and have their NFL dreams come true.

Typically, first-round picks are announced by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. But from there on out, there’s no shortage of special guests announcing a plethora of picks.

Just last year, Miles Sanders announced the Eagles’ second-round draft pick. That got us thinking: Which Penn Stater would we want to see announce an NFL Draft pick?

Here’s what some of our staffers had to say.

Charles Reinert: Curt Chandler

The person who announces an NFL Draft pick should represent everything good about Penn State. That’s why I believe the person who should do such a task is Curt Chandler. He’s a staple in multimedia journalism classes here at Penn State, and he loves what he does. He’s a professor who loves his students and will do anything to help them out. You’ll find it hard to find anyone that disliked his COMM 271 class. His bright and positive personality would shine up on stage standing next to Roger Goodell. He would make Penn Staters far and wide proud. Bonus points if he announces the pick in his unicorn onesie or light-up sweater.

Matt Rudisill: Keegan Michael Key (as James Franklin)

To be completely honest, I don’t know which NFL team he would represent in this scenario. Regardless, I think Keegan Michael Key in character as Penn State’s own James Franklin would make an entertaining draft pick speech. Frankly (no pun intended), seven rounds of selections can get boring at times. To break up the monotony, a pick announcement by Key as Coach Franklin would certainly give any draftee a night to remember.

Jordan Mansberger: Michael Mauti

While he’s been out of the NFL for just a short period of time, I think it would be awesome for all Nittany Lion fans to see him make a pick. Mauti may not have had a tremendous NFL career, but he gave his all considering the gruesome injury he suffered during his final year at Penn State. There’s no doubt in my mind that he would do a great job of making the pick, but fans could still boo depending on what name he announces.

Gabe Angieri: The Nittany Lion

“With the 37th pick…in the 2021 NFL Draft…the Philadelphia Eagles select…[*indiscernible lion noises]!”

Electric stuff, folks.

Will Pegler: Sue Paterno

This is too easy. SuePa always steals the show at whatever appearance she makes, so she should absolutely have the opportunity to announce a draft pick. In fact, why not give her a chance at announcing a first-round pick? Move over, Roger Goodell.

Which Penn Stater would *you* like to see take the stage to announce an NFL Draft pick? Let us know in the comments!
