Lady Lions’ Shay Hagans & Tova Sabel Enter Transfer Portal

Penn State women’s basketball guards Shay Hagans and Tova Sabel announced this weekend that they will enter the transfer portal. Both used their Instagram accounts to share the news.

“Thank you to the coaches for recruiting me and for all the opportunities at Penn State,” Hagans wrote. “To my teammates, thank you for pushing me and developing me into the player I am today. I am so grateful for the past three years in State College.”

Hagans played in all 29 games this season and started 15 of them. She was the fourth-best scorer on Carolyn Kieger’s squad, but she made her presence known on defense, where she finished second on the team with 50 steals. The soon-to-be senior guard still has two years left of eligibility.

Sabel, who played an essential role off the bench for Penn State, will start her new journey somewhere else with two years left of eligibility, too.

“Thank you Penn State!” Sabel wrote. “I am so grateful for the coaches who recruited me and for my teammates that I have gotten to play with for these past two years. I have learned so much, and I appreciate every opportunity I have had, and [the] relationships I have gotten the chance to build in State College.”

Across 26 games played, the Swedish guard averaged 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. She posted her career-high points, with 19, back in February against Minnesota.

Hagans and Sabel join Niya Beverley and Kelly Jekot as Lady Lions who, at least on paper, are not expected to return to Penn State next season.
