Widespread Power Outage Disrupting Traffic Lights On North Atherton Street

A widespread power outage on Tuesday evening is affecting more than 2,400 homes and businesses in Centre County and disrupting traffic lights on North Atherton Street.

Traffic signals are out on North Atherton Street between Woodycrest Street and Valley Vista Drive in Patton Township, according to Centre County 9-1-1. Emergency responders are on the scene for traffic control and West Penn Power has been notified.

The largest number of outages is in Patton Township, where 1,802 customers — more than a quarter of all West Penn Power customers in the township — are without power as of 6 p.m. Most of those outages were in Gray’s Woods and Park Forest Village. West Penn crews have been dispatched and estimated restoration times are between 8 and 9:30 p.m., according to the company’s outages website.

Outages also are affecting 304 West Penn customers in Halfmoon Township, 182 in Ferguson Township, 57 in Port Matilda, 35 in State College, 31 in Worth Township, and 10 in College Township.

A spokesperson for West Penn Power said the outage resulted from a circuit lockout, which can be triggered by various causes and force power to shut off in a certain area. The specific cause of the circuit lockout on Tuesday night was not yet known.
