Jalen Pickett Named To Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List

Penn State men’s basketball is getting national attention, folks.

Veteran guard Jalen Pickett has been named to the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, as announced by the award’s committee Thursday afternoon. The honor is gifted annually to the men’s basketball National Player of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writer’s Association (USBWA).

Pickett started the year with the program’s second triple-double in history against Butler and has since averaged 17.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists. He is the only player in the country to average 17 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, and would join Denzel Valentine as the only player to eclipse the mark over the last 30 years.

The 6’4″ guard also ranks second in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio with 3.74, while also ranking fourth in assists per game. Within the Big Ten, he is the only player to reside in the top ten in scoring, rebounding, and assists per outing.

To go along with his triple-double, Pickett has tallied five double-doubles, posted 16 double-digit scoring nights, and led the Nittany Lions in assists in every game this season. He is also just 67 assists away from breaking Tim Frazier’s single-season assists record in 2012 with 14 games left.

The USBWA has gifted its National Player of the Year honor since the 1958-59 season. The award winner will be announced at the 2023 Men’s Final Four in Houston.

Pickett and Co. will travel back to Bryce Jordan Center in hopes of bouncing back from their loss to Wisconsin with a bout against Nebraska. Tipoff is set for 2:15 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
