Penn State Historical Markers We Want To See

Blue historical markers are placed all across campus to remember important events, people, and inventions. In 1989, the Penn State Alumni Association and the Office of Strategic Communications launched this project to celebrate intellectual and scientific developments at Penn State.

There are well-known historical markers, such as the Nittany Lion Shrine and Old Main, as well as lesser-known ones, such as the Heart-Assist Pump near the Hammond Building.

It’s time we add some new historical markers to campus that represent some more recent and exciting Penn State news and events. Perhaps, they’re more chaotic and less prestigious, but they still represent the Penn State that we all know and love.

Check out some of our ideas below.

College Avenue Taco Bell

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

It has been roughly three years since Taco Bell closed on College Avenue. Are we just supposed to forget about the loss we suffered? The answer is no. We may not have easy access to Baja Blast anymore, but we would love a reminder of times when we did.

The Willard Preacher

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

Gary Cattell, also known as the Willard Preacher, has been holding down the same four concrete squares in front of the Willard Building since, seemingly, the dawn of time. Simply put, he’s a campus staple.

The Twerk Circle (Twerkle?)

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

Penn State’s Class of 2024 made history that night, creating a new form of art that none have been able to replicate since. The Twerk Circle, affectionately known as the “Twerkle,” must be memorialized in the quad of East Halls.

The Campus Bear

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

2020 was a crazy year, not that that needs to be said. Not too long after The Twerk Circle, a bear roamed into the middle of campus on what had been a rather calm Monday night. Could it be that the bear caught wind of some feeble attempts at twerking and came to show those freshmen how to properly throw it back? The world may never know.

The Green Link

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

She isn’t necessarily dead yet, but she is in one hell of a coma. The Green Link was beloved by students who held commuter parking passes. We love you, “Glink.” Rest in peace…at least for now?

Drew Allar

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

We’re manifesting just a little bit here. Nittany Nation may be putting too much pressure on Allar to perform, but the guy is legitimately good at football. It isn’t just Penn State fans, though, as Sports Illustrated recently gave him the 10th-best odds to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy. Don’t think of this as pressure, Drew, think of it as ~motivation.~

Mark Zuckerberg Spotting

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

Zuck may have went to dropped out of Harvard, but it appears he always wanted to be a Nittany Lion at heart. Not many people know that he visited State College in the fall of 2022. Those that do know aren’t quite sure why. Naturally, this mysterious event needs to be remembered. What went down at that cryptic Tavern lunch?

HUB Snowball

Aidan Conrad | Onward State

Nothing quite says “We Are” like a giant ball of snow, mud, and grass sitting in the middle of the Hetzel Union Building. This tradition is rather new, but we believe it is one that is here to stay. When the class of 2037 is rolling its first HUB snowball of the season, we want them to remember the origins of the OG HUB Snowball.
