Penn State Football Opens As 18.5-Point Early Betting Favorite Against West Virginia

It may be early, but Vegas likes Penn State to take care of West Virginia in its 2023 season opener.

FanDuel released odds for a handful of marquee matchups during the 2023 season. The Nittany Lions open up as an 18.5-point favorite over the Mountaineers. As spring ball approaches, there are still questions to be answered before opening weekend kicks off, but Vegas thinks it has things figured out.

Penn State went 11-2 and topped off its season with a 35-21 Rose Bowl win over Pac-12 champion Utah. The Nittany Lions return key starters across the board and boast plenty of young talent.

West Virginia finished last season an underwhelming 5-7 and failed to secure a bowl berth of any kind. The Mountaineers lost their starting quarterback, JT Daniels, to the transfer portal, and Neal Brown remains the head coach and will have another new signal-caller for his fifth year.

The last time the Nittany Lions and Mountaineers squared off was in 1992 when Joe Paterno and Co. stormed into Morgantown and secured a 40-26 victory. Penn State has dominated the all-time series with a 48-9-2 record. This year’s rendition is set to kick off on Saturday, September 2, at Beaver Stadium.

FanDuel also has lines on a few other Penn State games, too. The Nittany Lions open up as 9.5-point and 1.5-point underdogs to Ohio State and Michigan, respectively, while they’re a 10.5-point favorite over Iowa. Penn State is slated at +2000 to win the National Championship.
