Brainstorming Penn State-Themed Sports Illustrated Covers
Last week, the beloved magazine Sports Illustrated made mass layoffs, shocking the sports and journalism world. The outlet that stood as a leader in sports journalism was reduced to a minimal staff after years of incredible coverage.
If you’re a fan of any sport, you likely grew up reading the popular magazine. With the likely end of Sports Illustrated, many people are looking back at their favorite and most iconic magazine covers that Sports Illustrated produced. We decided to create our own Penn State-themed covers to reminisce about the beloved magazine and our favorite Penn State sports memories.
Andrew Funk’s Legacy Game
In its first NCAA Tournament game since 2011, the Nittany Lions needed a spark to upset No. 7 Texas A&M. Andrew Funk was that spark as he finished the game with 27 points after making eight of his 10 three-point attempts. Thanks to Funk, Penn State earned its first tournament win since 2001.
Back-To-Back National Champions
Throughout the early part of this century, not much was stopping Penn State women’s volleyball. In 2014, it won its sixth national title in eight years.
2023 Rose Bowl
After a long, polarizing career, Sean Clifford played one of the best games of his career in the Rose Bowl to leave Penn State not only a Rose Bowl champion but a legend.
Wrestling Dynasty
Folks are witnessing one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. Since Cael Sanderson became the head coach of Penn State wrestling, the team has won 10 of 12 national titles since 2011 and doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
White Out
Who knew when the first White Out took place in Beaver Stadium in 2007 it would gain the national recognition it has today?
