Go Go Gadjet Rocks The Bryce Jordan Center During THON 2024’s Final Performance
With just less than an hour until the 46-hour mark, Go Go Gadjet took the stage to close out THON 2024. The alternative band blended a medley of hit songs from the 2000s to a roaring crowd of onlookers.
The group opened with “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj and strobe lights accompanying deafening cheers from the BJC. Without missing a beat, Go Go Gadjet transitioned right into “Fire Burning” by Sean Kingston. They then moved into “Mr. Brightside” before “Hey Ya,” calling on the crowd to sing it back to them, which they did without hesitation.
Lead singer Alex Buonopane told the crowd he’d be throwing the setlist back to the early 2000s before breaking into “Sk8er Boi.” Go Go Gadjet moved into “Shake It” by Metro Station, with the entire BJC and letters shaking along, just as called for before getting everyone to share their “Dirty Little Secret.”
The group slowed things down a little bit, with the opening piano notes of “Thousand Miles,” breaking out over the loudspeakers and the letters immediately swaying to the beat. As soon as they slowed down a bit, they switched gears once again.
“Friends, we’re gonna change gears a little bit,” Bunopane exclaimed. “I need you to listen and react here.”
The fast transitions kept coming, as they moved on to “It Wasn’t Me,” “Party in the USA,” “Crazy In Love,” and the band threw the mic to the crowd to sing back that it “Must Be The Money.” The BJC lit up when “Hey There Delilah” blasted on speakers, with everyone immediately pulling out their flashlights.
The usual PG-crowd went wild when Go Go Gadjet broke into “Get Low,” causing the BJC to sing along not only in the stands but “from the windows, to the walls.” Throwing it back to last year’s national act, Natasha Benningfield, they covered “Unwritten,” a fan favorite in the BJC over the last 46 hours. The crowd vibed along to “In The End” and “Yeah!” before becoming a “Hollaback Girl” for Go Go Gadjet.
Buonopane then asked the crowd to turn their attention to bass player Luke Anderson, who broke out into “Stacy’s Mom” before the accompanying vocalist stepped up to the crowd for a solo to “Tik Tok.” Buonopane took over again to bring “Dynamite,” “Love Song,” and “1985” to the crowd.
In classic Penn State fashion, the beat dropped to “Seven Nation Army,” and the crowd knew exactly what to do in respond to the stadium tune.
Rheed and Buonopane came together to sing “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life,” remixing the beat into “Low.” The opening notes of “Since You’ve Been Gone” brought screams from the stands, causing Buonopane to tell them, “You know this — this will be a good one. Sing it!”
Go Go Gadjet inched towards the end of their set, with “You Belong With Me,” “Sugar,” and “Lose Yourself,” with the Nittany Lion jumping in the crowd inching towards the stage.
“This is going to be our last song, I think. You’ve made it to the end!” Go Go Gadjet told the crowd, to some backlash. The BJC lit up with thousands of flashlights swaying along to “Drops of Jupiter” and the Nittany Lion leading the crowd in a swaying motion.
Ending his time on stage, Buonopane said, “Penn State! Let me see those diamonds up!” with the packed arena throwing them up on demand. Go Go Gadjet led a “We Are!” chant and ran off the stage with the Nittany Lion to a roaring crowd.
