Taking A Look At Funniest Plant Names At Penn State Arboretum

Have you ever been to the Arboretum and admired the Pussytoes or Yew? If not, do we have a treat for you?

The beginning of the school year allows Penn Staters to soak up their last couple weeks of decent weather before being reminded they go to school in the frozen tundra. With that being said, it’s still the perfect time to take a stroll through the Arboretum and admire some of its most comical plant names.

With names like Hairy Aster and Blue Banana, it’s hard not to chuckle a little. We here at Onward State always enjoy a good laugh, so we rounded up some humorous plant findings. So without further ado, let’s check them out.

Ever wonder what a Blue Banana would taste like? Yeah, me neither. Feeling blue? This plant might just peel away all your worries.

Looking for a plant with some purr-sonality? Well, Pussytoes are sure to knock your socks off. This vibrant green plant might not purr, but it will definitely give you that “starts in your toes” and “crinkle your nose” feeling.

This one goes out to all the sports bettors out there: meet the Overcup Oak Tree, your new good luck charm. The Overcup Oak is the motivation you need to always bet the over and smoke those parlays. If there was an Arboretum Super Bowl, our money would be on this top-notch tree. Some may say it’s even the MVP (Most Valuable Plant).

Next up is Hairy Aster. This doesn’t need much explaining.

Following Hairy Aster are both Hairy and Smooth Beardtongues. Whether your type is more rugged or groomed, these plants have you covered.

If anyone is in need of a nanny for their friend who had one too many dollar vodka sodas at Champs, just drop them off at the Arboretum with the Nannyberry!

Has anyone’s grandma ever asked for a side of oats with something? If you’re ever feeling homesick, Side-Oats Grama might provide you some comfort and give you that home-away-from-home feeling.

Moo-ve on over to the Arboretum to get a glimpse of the Cowslip. Just like real cows, this plant can be found in grassy areas. The Cowslip is udderly beautiful!

Hey, Yew! I mean, come on, it’s hard not to laugh at that name. Maybe yew just smirked a little?

Picture this: you have a crazy idea that you probably shouldn’t do but just can’t resist, and all you need is a little encouragement. Don’t fret, the Nodding Onion has your back. The Arboretum’s bad boy will always be the bad influence you need and is always ready to urge you to take one more shot or have another beer before your class at 9 a.m. the next day.

Flowering Spurge is like an adolescent hitting puberty for the Arboretum gardens. With its budding flowers, continual growth, and transitions throughout the seasons, this plant is blossoming into a beautiful young adult.

Anything is possum-ble when you’re exploring the Arboretum with the possum-haw!
