Onward Debates: Champs Downtown Upstairs Or Downstairs

There’s no question that Champs Downtown is one of the best nightlife bars downtown State College has to offer.

From its legendary Dollar Vodka Soda Night to DJ Yemi, there’s no doubt Champs is a hot commodity when it comes to going out Thursday through Saturday. But the real question is: Which floor of Champs’ two-story setup is the best — upstairs or downstairs?

Sure, each has different perks and vibes, but everyone has their preference. Two of our staffers went head-to-head to settle the debate.

Mikey DeAngelis: Champs Downstairs Is Better

Champs is one of my favorite bars in State College. I think both floors are awesome and have different perks, and the variety is what makes it so popular. However, I think downstairs is clearly better. For those who have never been to Champs, its downstairs features a bar with all the same drink options as upstairs, plus several retro pinball machines, a half-dozen pool tables, and a ton of fun arcade games like Mario Kart.

The main perk of downstairs at Champs is that it’s always fun. Upstairs is great when there’s a DJ and the crowd is bumping, but most days of the week, the upstairs is kind of empty, which doesn’t fit the vibe. Downstairs, no matter how many people are there, is awesome. I’m always happy to wander into Champs on a weeknight, with no cover charge, and head downstairs to play some pool and watch sports. Even on busy nights, it’s super fun to hang out downstairs with almost all of the perks of upstairs. If you need any more convincing, there’s a Jurassic Park game.

Evan Halfen: Champs Upstairs Is Superior

Let’s talk atmosphere. Champs’ upstairs section offers a much more lively vibe with a massive bar, dance floor, and live DJs most of the time. When you’re upstairs, it’s like a choose-your-own-adventure. If you want to casually drink and chat with friends, you can grab a booth. If you want to get hyped, you can go to the balcony or dance floor. Between the smoke machines, music, TVs, constant dancing, and music blasting, upstairs never misses.

Although the basement of Champs can be fun at times, it gives sweaty frat basement vibes but with pinball machines. The upstairs feels more social and fun whether you’re hanging out and dancing with friends or just catching a game. To put it simply, there’s always something happening upstairs, and it sets the high vibes for the night.

Sure, the basement has its charm, but if you’re looking for a more dynamic social scene, Champs’ upstairs is the clear winner. Besides, nothing beats people-watching from those balconies.
