Former Beta Theta Pi President & Vice President Sentenced To 2-4 Months For Role In Piazza Death

Former Beta Theta Pi President Brendan Young and Vice President Daniel Casey were sentenced to two to four months in jail on Tuesday in Bellefonte for their role in the 2017 hazing death of Tim Piazza. The pair pled guilty to 14 counts of hazing and one count of reckless endangerment in July.

Young and Casey sentence came with work release eligibility and will be followed by three years probation, plus community service.

Previously, Young and Casey, who also served as pledge master at the time of Piazza’s death, were previously charged with 30 counts of hazing and one count of involuntary manslaughter each. The hazing charges were pared down and the involuntary manslaughter charges were dropped.

“Our thoughts are with the Piazza family and everyone affected by this tragedy,” Attorney General Henry said in a release. “Nothing can undo the harm Tim suffered seven years ago — nothing can bring Tim back to his family and friends. With the sentences ordered today, the criminal process reached a conclusion.”

Piazza’s death, which was nationally publicized, was the result of the then-sophomore falling down the stairs at the fraternity after competing in an “obstacle course.” Piazza was left on a couch in the fraternity’s basement and did not receive treatment until the next morning. Piazza died a few days later.

Each count of hazing pertained to one of the 14 members of the group rushing at Beta Theta Pi with Piazza. The reckless endangerment charge related to Piazza, specifically. All charges were misdemeanors.
