Gameday Observations: Washington
The greatest show in college sports has come and gone again.
Penn State football took care of Washington 35-6 in a sold-out Beaver Stadium for the 2024 White Out game. The Nittany Lions’ matchup was broadcast on Peacock, NBC’s subscription-based streaming platform, but that didn’t stop the fans in Happy Valley from going all out for the game.
From the student section to the beauty of a night game, here’s all we noticed on Saturday.
Aesthetically, There’s Nothing Better Than A Night White Out…
There really is nothing better than the greatest show in college sports. The Penn State White Out is unmatched. Anyone can try to imitate it, but nobody can replicate it.
A night White Out, of course, is possibly the greatest thing that humankind ever came up with. The crowd adorned in white stands out against the dark sky is something that everyone should get to experience. Washington wasn’t the best opponent and Peacock wasn’t the best broadcaster, but a night White Out is just perfect…
…But Playing A Good Team Would Be Nice, Too
…However, let’s all get mad at Big Noon Kickoff again. There is no justification to make Penn State play then-5-4 Washington just to have a night White Out. The Penn State White Out was made for marquee matchups against top teams at night. It wasn’t made for noon games against good teams and it wasn’t made for night games against bad teams.
After back-to-back-to-back years of playing Minnesota, Iowa, and Washington, the White Out is starting to have to fight for some of its allure. Who knows when we’ll get another Grant Haley moment that only the White Out can produce?
Students Head For The Exits At Halftime
After breaking the Beaver Stadium attendance record last week against Ohio State with 111,030 fans in attendance, the Nittany Lions drew a still-impressive crowd of 110,233 to the White Out, the ninth-highest-attendance in the stadium’s history.
Still, students started trickling out of the stadium by halftime with the Nittany Lions controlling the game. Plenty of fans stuck around through the Alma Mater, though many didn’t see the end of the greatest show in college sports. Personally, I moved up at least 15 rows from when I arrived in the stadium to the last five minutes of the fourth quarter.
Three White Outs Down, One To Go (Probably)
Saturday’s White Out, for better or worse, was essentially Penn State’s third of the season. After the “White Out…energy” game against Illinois, the “sneaky White Out” Helmet Stripe game against Ohio State, and Saturday’s real White Out, Penn State fans have worn a lot of white this season.
Of course, the White Outs might not be over. With Penn State projected to host a College Football Playoff game, James Franklin could call for “White Out…energy” one more time. We won’t complain. A Beaver Stadium White Out for the playoffs sounds like a dream come true.
