Katie Schumacher-Cawley Completes Chemotherapy, Rings Bell

Penn State women’s volleyball head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley rang the bell after a six-month battle with breast cancer, she announced via Instagram Monday night.
“Well, we did it! Six rounds of chemo—done! Today, I rang the bell, marking the end of this chapter. What a journey it has been,” Schumacher-Cawley wrote. “There truly are no words to express how deeply grateful I am for the unwavering support from every corner of my life.”
Schumacher-Cawley announced she was diagnosed with breast cancer on October 17, but continued coaching the Nittany Lions, leading them to a 35-2 season that culminated in a national championship. She became the first female head coach to win a women’s volleyball NCAA title.
The 44-year-old thanked her husband Mike, daughters Stella, Nora, and Shea, and mother for staying by her side, saying they “wrapped [her] in love, strength, and resilience when [she] needed it most. She also showed her gratitude to other members of the Penn State coaching staff for their support throughout the process.
“To the moms and dads who stepped in to help Mike with carpools, meals, and extra care for my girls—your kindness does not go unnoticed,” Schumacher-Cawley continued. “And to those I have never met but who took the time to send letters and gifts—your words of encouragement have meant more than you know.”
Schumacher-Cawley concluded her comments by saying thank you to her doctors at the UPenn Medical Center where she underwent treatment.
“This journey has tested me in every way, but it has also shown me the depth of love, community, and resilience. From the bottom of my heart—thank you.”
