No Refund Theatre Presents: ‘Getting Sara Married’

I’ll say it — I enjoy a good rom-com. A little light entertainment to avoid thinking for an hour or two. Nothing wrong with that. A really good rom-com is hard to find, though. A lot of the time you get stuck with an eerily familiar plot, the repetitive comic relief, and end up falling asleep in the middle, with no desire to rewind.

Every once and a while, though, you find a great one. Sure, it still has all the rom-com trademarks, but it’s got a little pizazz. NRT’s new production, “Getting Sara Married,” is one of those stories.

“Getting Sara Married” is about two 30-somethings, Sara (Alyzah Avila) and Brandon (Eray Calimano), who get set up. Bear with me. Sara wants nothing to do with the unfairer sex, and Brandon is engaged. Bear with me. The star-crossed lovers are brought together in the most romantic way: kidnapping and food poisoning. Told you.

Sara’s crazy Aunt Martha (Sara Blankenbiller) has decided the only way to get her niece into a relationship is to kidnap a random guy and deliver him to her doorstep. She’ll deal with the fiancĂ© later. I won’t spoil any more, but trust me, hijinks ensue.

This production is directed by Rayann Patterson, assisted by Rachel Sabo and Emma Smith. In the minuscule turnaround allowed by No Refund Theatre, this crew has managed to put together a tight, well-acted show with laughs around every corner.

The show will be performed at 8 p.m. from March 20 to 22, in Forum 111. Don’t miss it.
