Penn State Startup Week Powered By PNC Returns March 24

Penn State is set to host its “Startup Week,” bringing Penn State students, alumni entrepreneurs, and innovators together from Monday, March 24, to Friday, March 28.

The event aims to immerse into different prevalent industry topics and to recognize the creativity of students and alumni alike. Here’s the breakdown of this week’s most notable events.

Monday, March 24: So You Want To Start A Podcast

The session, featuring keynote speaker Lillian Xu of Vox Media, will cover the current state of the podcast industry and highlight how to start the process of creating a show and making it a business. The lecture will take place at noon in the Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub.

Tuesday, March 25: Go Everywhere, Eat Everything: A Culinary Journey

This lecture, featuring celebrity chef Simon Majumdar, will cover entrepreneurship in the culinary industry and the food media business. The session will begin at 4:35 p.m. in 104 Keller Building.

Wednesday, March 26: Hands-On with Robotic Arm Technology

The workshop will incorporate a user-friendly touchscreen interface to teach students how to program a robotic arm to perform tasks. The session will span from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Noontime Lounge in the HUB.

Thursday, March 27: Penn State Brand Academy Panel

Former Penn State athletes — Omar Easy, Garry Gilliam, Douglas Wilber, Aaron Maybin, and Haley McClain Hill — will share how they built their brands, translated their athletic experiences to business success, and faced adversity. The panel will begin at 4:15 p.m. at the Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub.

Friday, March 28: The Penn State Startup Marketplace: Student Entrepreneurs In Action

The marketplace will showcase over a dozen student-run businesses. Some of the featured businesses include sustainable fashion brands like Thrifted Philly, Earth Angel Thrifts, and Core Carry, along with game company Whirl Pong. The marketplace will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3 Dots Downtown.


To make this year’s event unique, Startup Week will include a rotation of food trucks to engage students all week long. The Berkey Creamery’s Entrepreneur Chip ice cream flavor will also be available at select events.

Penn State Startup Week is an open university-wide event that encourages curious students of all majors to attend. All events and information on how to register can be found on the event’s website.
