It Doesn’t Get Much Better Than This: An Ode To Doggie’s Pub

Where else in State College can you get a slice of pizza and a 24oz IPA within a few steps?

Let me paint you a picture, folks. It’s April, you don’t need to wear a jacket to sit outside, you’re screaming along to the same set list you’ve heard from My Hero Zero the past four weekends, and your friends have gotten a table in perfect proximity to the outside bar. It may seem too good to be true, but that’s Doggies Pub for you. I’ve even seen the Willard Preacher look on in envy as he walks home, wishing he could join in on the fun.

If you know me, you know I’m an avid Doggies fan, but it’s not just because they have two slices of pizza for $3 from 9 to 11 p.m. and 1 to 2 a.m. It’s an indescribable feeling to be in Doggies on a Friday night with a drink in hand as you make your way outside to watch a game on the projector or meet with friends.

I can only describe it as the perfect embodiment of what it means to be in college. The drinks are strong, the music is good, and, when you’re drunk enough, the pizza tastes like it came straight from heaven. If you’re lucky enough to weave your way to the front of the bar for happy hour, then you’re night just got a whole lot better. Maybe you’re out with friends and want to get a picture but don’t want a boring one taken on your phone. No problem. Doggies has a TouchTunes booth where you can take four photos, free of charge.

Even in the winter months, Doggies somehow pulls off the best environment. Sure, the bathroom lines may be long, but I’d still rather wait for their clean bathrooms over whatever half-stall situation is happening at Cafe. Plus, the Doggie’s bathroom is cleaned every hour, so that’s another plus.

But, to top it all off, the Doggie’s beer garden gives it an edge that other bars simply can’t compete with. Sure, Cafe has tables outside, but then you’re just staring down people on their walk to class. Simply put, Doggie’s is just better. Better food, better drinks, and a better environment.
