Report: Former Cincinnati Guard Josh Reed Transfers To Penn State Hoops

Mike Rhoades finally got one.

Former Cincinnati guard Josh Reed has committed to transfer to Penn State men’s basketball, according to On3’s Joe Tipton. Reed became the Nittany Lions’ first pickup out of the transfer portal.

Reed, who is on his last season of eligibility, recorded 98 appearances and nine starts over three seasons with the Bearcats, with all nine starts coming last year. During the 2024-25 season, Reed averaged 4.7 points, 0.8 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per game while spending 17.4 minutes per game on the floor. He also notched 24 steals and seven blocks.

As a prospect, Reed was rated as a three-star coming out of high school by 247Sports. He was not rated as a transfer.

With Reed on the roster, Penn State fills one of several position spots needed by departures from players to the transfer portal or players who ran out of eligibility. After pulling the guard’s commitment, the Nittany Lions have five open roster spots, assuming Yanic Konan Niederhauser stays in the NBA Draft. If Konan Niederhauser pulls out, he will return to the Nittany Lions. Penn State was also the final Big Ten team to earn a commitment out of the portal this offseason.
