Fletcher Port Resigns As UPUA Vice President

University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) vice president Fletcher Port has resigned from his role Wednesday morning.
Port was elected with Rasha Elwakil as her running mate in April, winning a three-way race by 45 votes. In a controversial meeting, Elwakil was impeached on April 23 by the assembly, which did not give reasons for her removal.
He assumed her role until July 23, when UPUA decided the impeachment was unconstitutional and reinstated Elwakil as president.
Port released a statement on Wednesday morning, resigning as vice president effective immediately, sharing a professional opportunity that would take away time from UPUA.
“…I have been working for the engineering company Siemens for the past 3 summers. Recently, I was offered the opportunity to continue with them in a part-time role during the school year – an offer that will accelerate my professional growth and one I can’t pass up. After much reflection, I’ve realized I cannot give the role of Vice President the energy and attention it deserves while taking on this new responsibility,” he said.
Prior to becoming vice president, Port also served as an at-large representative and speaker of the assembly.
“This decision has been incredibly difficult. The UPUA has shaped me far greater than any other commitment,” said Port. “I’ve learned humility, resilience, and the power of a united student voice. I’ve had the honor of working alongside some of the most brilliant, driven leaders on this campus, and I’ll always carry those relationships with me.”
UPUA will now work to select a new vice president.
