Eight Former Penn State Football Players Cut From NFL Rosters

NFL teams announced their official 53-man rosters on Tuesday afternoon, leaving behind eight Nittany Lions in the wake of the league’s annual preseason cut.
From undrafted free agent rookies to veteran backups, here’s a guide to which former Penn Staters are missing from NFL rosters to open the season.
Tariq Castro-Fields
The Philadelphia Eagles waived former All-Big Ten cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields. The 2022 San Francisco 49ers draftee didn’t appear in a single game for the franchise, but did suit up for three games for the Washington Commanders in 2022 and 2023. Castro-Fields played in two contests for the Carolina Panthers before being waived in October 2024. The Eagles signed him to a futures contract in February.
Sean Clifford
Former Penn State signal caller Sean Clifford was waived by Green Bay for the second year in a row. He hasn’t appeared in a game since 2023, but did join the Packers’ practice squad this past season.
KJ Hamler
Former Penn State wideout KJ Hamler was waived by the Buffalo Bills for the second consecutive year despite making some noise in the preseason and signing a one-year deal with the team earlier this offseason. Hamler hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2022 and has been riddled with injuries throughout his professional career.
Coziah Izzard
Undrafted rookie Coziah Izzard was waived by the reigning AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs. It was always going to be a tough road for Izzard to win a spot on a stacked Chiefs defensive line, but he’s a practice squad candidate.
Dvon J-Thomas
Undrafted Penn State defensive tackle Dvon J-Thomas failed to make the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ 53-man roster after inking a three-year deal with the team in May. He appeared in all three preseason games for the Buccaneers and recorded two tackles for loss.
Jalen Kimber
Undrafted cornerback Jalen Kimber was waived by the Tennessee Titans after signing with the franchise after the draft, briefly reuniting with the Titans’ third-round pick and former teammate Kevin Winston Jr. Kimber had a strong Pro Day workout but ultimately failed to make the opening roster for a new-look Titans team.
Kalen King
The Green Bay Packers dropped former seventh-round pick Kalen King for the second consecutive year, but will likely snag a spot on the practice squad. He recorded four total tackles and one pass defended in the Packers’ 2025 preseason campaign.
Sal Wormley
Undrafted offensive lineman Sal Wormley failed to make the Jacksonville Jaguars’ initial roster, but he appeared in all three preseason games for the Florida franchise. He’s expected to make the practice squad.
