Penn State Men’s Lacrosse Alum Matt Traynor Clinches Premier Lacrosse League Championship

Penn State is taking over the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) once again.

Former Penn State men’s lacrosse captain Matt Traynor won the PLL championship game on Sunday afternoon with the New York Atlas. The Atlas beat the Denver Outlaws 14-13 for the team’s first title.

Traynor entered the game, replacing Xander Dickson, who left due to injury, and immediately had an impact, scoring with 48 seconds left in the second quarter and again 20 seconds into the third to help New York extend its lead to 10-7. He grabbed a hat trick on the day after drawing the goalie out and scoring on an empty net to force the seventh tie of the game.

Throughout his four years at Penn State, the midfielder played in 49 games, starting 40. He recorded 122 goals and 31 assists, grabbing 104 ground balls.

Traynor scored a career-high 45 goals last season, with 12 multi-goal games, including a career high of seven goals against Colgate. He was named the Big Ten offensive player of the year, consistently leading the Big Ten in both points and goals per game.

The Nittany Lion was selected by the Atlas No. 6 overall in the PLL Draft. In his rookie season, he played in 11 games, with 15 goals and nine assists, and was named an All-Star.
