Subu Vedam Released From Prison, Taken Into Custody By ICE

After more than four decades in prison for a murder he says he didn’t commit, Subramanyan (Subu) Vedam was released.
Centre County District Attorney Benrei Cantorna said his office will not pursue further prosecution and will file to drop the charges, just over a month after a judge overturned the conviction.
Vedam was convicted in 1983 of the 1980 murder of Tom Kinser, his former roommate. He was convicted on circumstantial evidence of a .25 caliber bullet found along with Kinser’s remains. Years later, evidence of an FBI report that was withheld shows the measurements of the bullet hole, which were more consistent with a .22 caliber weapon than Vedam’s .25 pistol.
He was released from Huntingdon state prison on Friday, and then immediately taken into custody by U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on a detainer issued in 1988.
An ICE spokesperson told StateCollege.com that Vedam “is a native and citizen of India subject to a final order of removal.”
According to a feature from the Bellisario College of Communications, he was born in India during a brief period when his family returned to India before moving back to the U.S when he was nine months old, and is a green card holder.
Prior to his murder conviction, Vedam had pleaded no contest to charges of receiving stolen property and selling LSD when he was 19. He also has a misdemeanor charge for possessing a small amount of marijuana.
The ICE spokesperson also called Vedam a “career criminal with a rap sheet dating back to 1980” who “is also a convicted controlled substance trafficker.”
Vedam is now detained at the Moshannon Valley ICE Processing Center in Clearfield County.
