Charlie Cerrato Named Big Ten First Star Of The Week

Coming off of a big season-opening road sweep of No. 15 Arizona State, one Penn State men’s hockey player got a big accolade for his performance.

Sophomore forward Charlie Cerrato was named the Big Ten’s First Star of the Week as the best player in the conference during the opening weekend of play. In two games, he potted a pair of goals and added four assists for a six-point weekend, while also being a plus-4 on the ice. Only Michigan’s Michael Hage had more points in the NCAA this weekend.

A bulk of Cerrato’s outburst came on Friday night, when he exploded for two goals and three assists in a 6-3 win to open the year. Cerrato’s first goal came at the end of the first period on assists by Aiden Fink and Gavin McKenna, teeing him up for a one-timer from the right faceoff circle.

His second goal came with under two minutes to play in the third period, when good puck movement on the power play found Cerrato in the slot to put the game away. Cerrato’s lone point on Saturday was a secondary assist after winning a faceoff that set up JJ Wiebusch for a game-tying goal in the third period.

Michigan’s Hage was named the Second Star, and Wisconsin’s Christian Fitzgerald got the Third Star. Goaltender Arsenii Sergeev was the last Nittany Lion to get a First Star on February 24.

The men’s hockey team is back in action on Thursday, October 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena against Clarkson in the team’s home opener. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
