Nittany Lions In The NFL: Week Seven Roundup

Coming off a loss to Iowa, it’s clear that Penn State football hasn’t had the season most of us were hoping for. With that being said, there’s plenty to get excited about, especially when watching former Penn Staters put the NFL on notice.
It was a busy week for the Penn State alumni in the pros, so let’s see how some former fan favorites fared in week seven.
Micah Parsons, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons had his best game since being acquired by the team in August. The former Penn State star recorded his first career three-sack game as the Packers narrowly beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-23. After a slow start to the year, this performance is exactly what Parsons needed to bolster his case for his first Defensive Player of the Year Award.
Theo Johnson, New York Giants
Theo Johnson continued his hot streak with another touchdown in week seven. He leads the Giants with four receiving touchdowns on the season. He had 66 yards receiving against the Denver Broncos.
With Malik Nabers out for the year, the Giants have needed as much receiving help as they can get, and Johnson has risen to the occasion. Despite the effort, the Giants fell to the Broncos in a 33-32 thriller.
Tyler Warren, Indianapolis Colts
The former John Mackey Award winner continues to excel in the league. Warren kept his stellar season going with another four receptions for 69 yards and a touchdown. He leads the Colts in receiving yards and has been a critical piece for the Colts’ surprising success so far. His play helped the Indianapolis move to a league-best 6-1 with a 38-24 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.
Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers
Freiermuth kicked off the busy week for former Penn State tight ends on Thursday Night Football. He easily had his best game of the year, hauling in five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. It’s been a rough start to the year for Freiermuth, but this performance reminded us all what the former second-round pick is capable of. His production, however, did not result in a win, as the Steelers fell to the Cincinnati Bengals 33-31.
Nick Scott, Carolina Panthers
Panthers defensive back Nick Scott has played a key part in the Panthers’ turnaround over the last few weeks. The Nittany Lion had a team-leading seven tackles in a 13-6 win over the Jets. His great play has the Panthers rolling as the squad moved above .500 for the first time since October 2021.
Parker Washington, Jacksonville Jaguars
The 2022 Second-Team All-Big Ten receiver headed off to London this week to play the Los Angeles Rams. It was a rough game for the Jaguars, but Washington was a bright spot for the Jacksonville offense. He reeled in four passes for 52 yards. He’s had some drop issues in the past few weeks, but it’s unlikely his role in the offense will be diminished.
Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles
Barkley’s cold streak running the ball continued into week seven. He finished his day with 44 yards on 18 carries and no rushing touchdown for the third week in a row. Even with the lack of production from their star running back, the Eagles scraped out a 28-22 win over the Vikings.
Juwan Johnson, New Orleans Saints
The Saints’ tight end had a productive day against the Bears. Despite the 26-14 loss, Johnson recorded five catches on seven targets for 79 yards. The former Penn State wideout continues his solid season and is top ten among tight ends in receiving yards.
Other Notable Performances:
- Joey Porter Jr. had an up-and-down day in coverage in the Steelers’ primetime loss to the Bengals. The third-year corner had two passes defended but was also called for two defensive pass interference penalties.
- Abdul Carter recorded three tackles in the Giants’ loss to the Broncos.
- Jaquan Brisker recorded a sack and six tackles in the Chicago Bears’ 26-14 win over the Saints.
- Arnold Ebiketie registered four tackles in the Atlanta Falcons’ 20-10 Sunday Night Football loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
