Penn State Wrestling Sets New Division I Record With 77 Consecutive Dual Victories

Penn State is a wrestling school, folks.

The Nittany Lions have won 77 dual matches in a row after beating North Dakota State 46-0 and No. 23 Stanford 42-0 in the Collegiate Duals event on Saturday in Nashville. The new record surpasses Oklahoma State’s 76 consecutive victories from 1937 to 1951.

Penn State’s winning streak dates back to February 2, 2020, when the Nittany Lions beat the Maryland Terrapins 40-3 after losing two days prior to Iowa in a 19-17 loss in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. For those of you not counting, Penn State hasn’t lost a dual in 2,150 days. (That’s five years, 10 months, and 19 days).

Since that loss, Penn State has rattled off 77 straight, including five-straight Big Ten regular season titles, three Big Ten Championships, four NCAA Championships, and 17 individual NCAA titles by eight wrestlers. During that span, Penn State has outscored its opponents 2,666-514 in team points.

Cael Sanderson has been nothing short of dominant in his 16 seasons at Penn State. The head coach has a career record of 224-16-2 since taking over in the 2009-10 season. He has helped Penn State to 12 national titles and nine conference championships.

The Nittany Lions already have a 60-win dual streak in their history when they went undefeated from 2015 to 2019. That streak is 6th in Division I history.

Penn State will continue to chase history as its next dual against No. 19 Rutgers would be its 78th win in a row and good enough for the longest dual win streak in NCAA history. The Nittany Lions will take on the Scarlett Knights on January 10 in Rec Hall at 4 p.m. The dual will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
