Former Penn State Football Running Back Corey Smith Transfers To Toledo

Former Penn State running back Corey Smith is transferring to Toledo, as announced by the team on Saturday. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Smith was initially a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024 out of Waukesha, Wisconsin, being ranked the No. 3 player in the state and No. 26 running back in the nation out of high school, according to the 247Sports Composite. He committed in April 2023, choosing the Nittany Lions over Tennessee and Wisconsin, among others.

Smith redshirted in 2024, but still made an impact in four games playing behind Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. He made his collegiate debut in the 2024 White Out against Washington, logging 95 yards on six carries, including a 78-yard scamper that was the team’s longest of the year.

He finished with 152 rushing yards that year, but saw his role decrease in 2025 despite a similar depth chart due to Penn State’s unexpectedly tumultuous season. He served as one of the team’s primary kick returners, making a season-long 34-yard return against Northwestern.

He had nine carries in the Pinstripe Bowl before transferring, leaving Penn State with 36 career carries for 182 yards and a touchdown against Maryland in 2024 in 10 games.

Smith is the second former Penn State running back to commit elsewhere after Jabree Wallace-Coleman followed former running backs coach Stan Drayton to South Carolina. He is the second Nittany Lion to transfer to Toledo, joining linebacker Kari Jackson.
