Penn State Wrestling’s Marcus Blaze & Cole Mirasola Earn Big Ten Weekly Awards

Penn State wrestling currently has six wrestlers ranked No. 1 within their weight class. Since head coach Cael Sanderson took over in 2009, the Nittany Lions have not been strangers to collecting accolades. After a dominant defeat over No. 2 Ohio State, two Penn State wrestlers claimed Big Ten weekly honors.

Marcus Blaze was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for his defeat of No. 2-ranked Ben Davino. The match went to the tiebreakers round, and a slick reversal by Blaze helped propel him to a 3-2 victory over Davino. The 133-pounder currently holds a flawless 18-0 record. This is his second time being named Freshman of the Week so far this season.

Redshirt freshman Cole Mirasola also swept in a weekly accolade. The heavyweight earned Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. This comes after he upset No. 3-ranked Nick Feldman in a sudden victory, improving his season record to 13-4. All of Mirasola’s last three opponents have all been ranked within the top five. This is his second accolade of the season after he won Big Ten Freshman of the Week in January.

Penn State wrestling is currently 14-0 and 8-0 in the Big Ten. Its next test will be against the Princeton Tigers on Friday, February 20. The match is set for 7 p.m. at Rec Hall and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
