After Up & Down Season, Penn State Men’s Lacrosse Prepares For Postseason Test

After a five-game rollercoaster stretch of conference matchups, Penn State men’s lacrosse finished the regular season 7-5 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play. While the season may not have gone entirely as planned, the Nittany Lions still earned a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, being named co-champs alongside Johns Hopkins, Maryland, and Ohio State.
As the Big Ten Tournament begins this weekend, Johns Hopkins enters as the No. 1 seed, followed by Penn State at No. 2, Maryland at No. 3, Ohio State at No. 4, Michigan at No. 5, and Rutgers at No. 6. Both Penn State and Johns Hopkins earned first-round byes and will benefit from a few days of extra rest before next week’s semifinal matchups.
Despite the accomplishment, head coach Jeff Tambroni believes there was still room for more.
“We spoke with our guys about it because, between travel, injuries, weather, and performance, it is not an easy feat. Part of the equation is a congratulations to share a part of it, but at the same time, we were up in a few games, and we felt like we left some meat on the bone,” Tambroni stated. “At the end of the day, it’s probably more a sense of pride than frustration, but I know we still have some frustration for not finishing some games.”
While the first-round bye provides some valuable recovery time, Tambroni acknowledges it can be a double-edged sword.
“I think it’s 50/50, because rest or rhythm is a real thing. You don’t have time to ease back into it like the regular season. Regardless, you need your leaders to adapt and continue the momentum,” Tambroni said. “We need to frame the week off as a work week, not a rest week. There has to be an action plan every day and a hunger to get better.”
Penn State will face the winner of Rutgers vs. Maryland in the semifinals, ensuring a familiar opponent on a familiar playing field either way. The matchup will take place at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey, where Rutgers could potentially have home-field advantage if it advances.
Although Penn State won’t formally watch as a team, coach Tambroni will certainly be keeping an eye on the game.
“We don’t have plans to watch it as a team, but we have talked about getting together in a coaches group to watch it. We’ll probably collaborate about it on Sunday morning and go from there. We will attempt to collect as much info as we can and get right back after it on Monday,” Tambroni stated.
Penn State is coming off a dominant 16-8 win over Rutgers in the regular-season finale. Hunter Aquino led the way with four goals, but the offensive production went well beyond just him. Eight different Nittany Lions notched a goal against the Scarlet Knights, showcasing the unit’s depth and firepower.
“It was multifactorial, and a big piece of that was just getting guys back into practice and rhythm. Hunter and Andrew are significant contributors, and they came back in the Michigan game, but it was hard since we didn’t have a ton of rhythm,” Tambroni emphasized. “I think having more time to build rhythm helped, and it was good to get them back because it created a sense of belief.”
The win over Rutgers also secured the Friendship Cup, a trophy that carries added history and meaning within the matchup.
“I think each year is very different, and every year takes on a brand new set of circumstances. In this particular year, coming off two straight losses, I think it sharpened the attention of our guys and created a sense of urgency,” Tambroni said. “I do believe there is a sense of pride in history too, so that provides a connection to purpose outside of just lacrosse.”
Offensively, Penn State has been one of the most productive teams in the conference, leading the Big Ten with 156 goals and averaging 13 per game. A key contributor to that success has been freshman Jack Iannantuono. He finished the regular season with 16 goals and 16 assists, highlighting his all-around impact as the quarterback of the offense.
Iannantuono was recently named the 2026 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Iannantuono follows in the footsteps of teammate Aquino, who received the same recognition last season. Iannantuono has been dominant since day one, requiring little time to adjust.
“Jack works so hard, and he has been really consistent for us this year. Your freshman season is a grind, and it’s longer than anything in your career, so for him to do that at this level says a lot about who he is. He has proven to be mentally and physically tough,” Tambroni said. “It is well deserved on his part, and it speaks about the future of our program.”
While the offense has garnered much of the attention, Penn State’s defense has been anchored by senior Alex Ross. Earlier this month, Ross was selected No. 8 overall by the New York Atlas in the Premier Lacrosse League Draft. He leads the team with 18 caused turnovers and has been a consistent presence over the past several seasons, earning All-Big Ten Second Team honors as a junior.
Ross may not stand out as the most vocal leader, but he brings a presence and work ethic that is undeniable.
“He is not the most vocal, but not in a negative way; it is just the opposite. He works extremely hard, and a lot of times it is in the dark when nobody is watching. He spends a lot of time in the weight room and cares about the little details that go into being a great lacrosse player,” Tambroni emphasized. “He puts himself in a position to play at the level he does, and our guys take notice. He is someone who leads by example when he goes out there.”
Despite the ups and downs of the regular season, Penn State enters the postseason with plenty of optimism. With multiple players returning and momentum building at the right time, the Nittany Lions have shown they can compete with the best.
The question now is which version of Penn State will show up next week in New Jersey. Will it be the team that defeated five ranked opponents, or the one that suffered three unranked losses? The answer remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: When playing at its best, this Nittany Lion squad has the potential to make noise regardless of the opponent.
