How It Happened
Saint Francis came to the plate first but couldn’t record a hit, managing only one base runner from a walk. Breanna Hanik drew a walk to start the action for the Nittany Lions, but was left on base, neither team reaching home in the first inning.
Bridget Nemeth remained dominant in the circle, retiring the Red Flash in order. Penn State’s offense erupted in the second inning, beginning with Michela Barbanente’s single up the middle to spark a ten-run surge. Barbanente then stole second before a bunt from Frankie Flesher advanced her to third. Natalie Lieto followed with a two-run blast to center field, and Madison Seidel added a sacrifice bunt to bring in another run.
Kaylie Walters walked and stole second before a Brooke Klosowicz triple drove her home. Allison Oneacre continued the rally with a double to right-center, scoring Klosowicz, and Gabby Gradishar reached on a walk to turn the lineup over. Barbanente homered to right field, tallying three runs, followed by Seidel swinging for a two-run homer. The Nittany Lions secured ten runs on eight hits to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Mackenzie Duncan took the mound in the third for the Nittany Lions, holding the Red Flash to just one hit. Penn State bats were quiet in the third with no hits.
Duncan pitched another three-up, three-down inning, keeping Saint Francis scoreless through four. Barbanente singled to right field for her third hit of the night, but was thrown out at second. Flesher walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Cara Bohner sent a two-run shot to right field to make the score 12-0.
Abigail Britton completed the shutout, and Penn State finished with a run-rule victory, 12-0 in five innings.
