‘I’m A Man Of My Word’: Penn State Football Quarterback Commit All In On Nittany Lions

Penn State is hot on the recruiting trail for 2027 and 2028, and the Nittany Lions recently received some good news regarding the latter in the form of four-star quarterback James Armstrong.

Armstrong’s commitment this past week marked a huge get for Matt Campbell and company, as the young talent from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, may be the future at the signal-caller position for the blue and white in as little as two years.

The 6’3 225-pounder held offers from West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Ole Miss, Georgia, and Auburn, but Penn State ultimately stood out to Armstrong due to the coaching staff and the program’s national prominence.

“College football nowadays, you see a lot of moving pieces,” Armstrong told Viking Sports Now. “One of the big things is just that, Coach Campbell, I know that this is his dream job. I don’t think he’s going to go anywhere.”

Armstrong has shone out thus far in his high school career. In 2025, he threw for 2,232 yards and 21 touchdowns while recording just three interceptions. He is also a dual-sport athlete, batting .382 on his school’s baseball team as an outfielder.

Despite having two years of high school and plenty of recruiting opportunities ahead of him, Armstrong committed earlier than is typical for 2028 recruits. He knew Penn State was the place for him since childhood, and he was eager to commit to that next step.

“Having that opportunity to be there feels like a no-brainer in my eyes, because it’s been something I’ve been wanting to do since I was younger,” Armstrong said.

While Armstrong won’t have to worry about the recruitment process anymore, the most exciting part of his football journey is still ahead of him. He will continue to compete for a state championship at Hopewell High School, but can’t help envision what awaits him in Happy Valley and beyond.

“My goal in life has always just been to be a big-time quarterback, big-name guy, famous celebrity,” he said. “This platform that [Penn State] will give me for the rest of my life will set me up for everything I want to do. It’s big-time football. I want to play in front of the most fans with a great fan base cheering for me every day.”

The confidence Armstrong has shown is something Penn State fans will look forward to seeing as he pushes toward a starting role in the future.

“That [is] a spot that I feel as though [is] mine,” he said. “I feel like I should be the quarterback at Penn State.”

But aside from confidence, perhaps the most notable trait that Armstrong exhibited following his decision is one that is rare in today’s college football: loyalty. As decommitments and transfer announcements run rampant in the sport, Armstrong has provided Nittany Lion fans with a sense of certainty.

“I feel as though I’m a man of my word. I’m not like one of those quarterbacks who commit here and then commit there and commit there,” he said. “I know where I want to play. I want to play football at Penn State.”
