Drew Allar needed just one preseason game to make an impression on Pittsburgh Steelers fans.

After his preseason debut on Thursday night, Allar’s jerseys quickly sold out in the Steelers Pro Shop before being restocked for his continuously growing fanbase.

The former Penn State quarterback helped lead Pittsburgh to a 28-9 victory over the Green Bay Packers during their preseason opener. Allar completed 10-of-13 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, plus a rushing score in his first-ever NFL game.

For a player who was selected third round in the 2026 NFL Draft, the performance immediately gave people a reason to be excited for what Allar could become this season.

“When we drafted Drew [Allar], we felt like we were getting a first-round pick … All of that is holding true,” head coach Mike McCarthy stated on The Pat McAfee Show Friday.

Before making the jump to the NFL, Allar spent four seasons with the Nittany Lions, starting 35 of the 45 games he played in. He completed 633 of 1,002 passes for 7,402 passing yards, 61 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in his college career.

He currently holds the Penn State record for the highest career completion percentage at 63.2%. His final season in 2025 was cut short after six games due to an ankle injury, but he still finished with 1,100 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Now, Allar is competing with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard for a quarterback spot behind veteran Aaron Rodgers. His first preseason game may have just strengthened that probability.

Even though the jerseys flying off the shelves may not determine Allar’s future in Pittsburgh, they show that Steelers fans are already buying into the new rookie.
