Former Penn State football fullback and Super Bowl champion Matt Suhey has died at age 68, the team announced Monday morning.

Suhey played for the Nittany Lions from 1976 to 1979, when he rushed for 2,818 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round of the 1980 NFL Draft and played all 10 seasons of his professional career with the team.

Over the course of Suhey’s 148 games with Chicago, he rushed for 2,946 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also tallied five receiving touchdowns.

Suhey was the starting fullback during the team’s 1985 Super Bowl run, scoring the first touchdown en route to a 46-10 rout of the New England Patriots. He played alongside good friend and NFL running back legend Walter Payton.

Suhey was beloved by fans mainly due to his unselfish personality and strong work ethic. His blocking talents helped pave the way for the Bears’ most successful decade in the history of the organization.

Joe Suhey, Matt’s son, played for Penn State from 2007 to 2010.
