[Photo Story] Penn State Women’s Hockey Loses To Ohio State In First Regular-Season Series

No. 4 Penn State women’s hockey opened its regular season with a series against No. 2 Ohio State at Pegula Ice Arena over the weekend.
Although the series ended in disappointment, our photographers were at Pegula to capture all the action.

Game one against the Buckeyes was the Nittany Lions’ first regular-season game at Pegula since last season’s NCAA Women’s Frozen Four run.
Both teams reached the Frozen Four last season, but only Ohio State advanced to the final after Penn State lost a heartbreaker to Wisconsin in overtime.

Penn State was outshot in the first period of both games, 15-1 in game one and 11-3 in game two. Despite that, the Nittany Lions kept Ohio State in check for most of the series.

Penn State won just 38.9% of its faceoffs across the two games, but its goaltending held strong, allowing only four goals on 75 Ohio State shots.

Grace Outwater scored both of Penn State’s goals in the series.
Her goal on Thursday tied the score in the second period, and on Friday, she opened the scoring in the first period.

In the end, the blue and white lost game one 2-1 just 46 seconds into overtime and couldn’t hold off the Buckeyes in game two, falling 2-1 again.

The Nittany Lions will return to the ice this weekend against Robert Morris at 6 p.m. Friday, October 2, and 2 p.m. Saturday, October 3. Friday’s game is the Morgan’s Message game, which supports the organization’s mission to eliminate the stigma surrounding student-athlete mental health. Saturday’s game is the THON and Night to Shine game. Night to Shine is a worldwide prom-style celebration for people with disabilities.
