If You Couldn’t See The Drone Show, You Didn’t Miss Out: An Open Letter To Fix Future Penn State Football Drone Shows

The White Out is supposed to be The Greatest Show in College Sports.
With record-breaking Beaver Stadium attendance and 100-plus decibels of crowd noise, there is plenty to look forward to on game day.
Apparently, another show-stopping spectacle to add to the list is squinting at the sky and collectively asking, “What?”
The drone show had potential. A display lighting up the sky above Beaver Stadium sounds like a really cool addition, so much so that we even wrote an open letter to have one.
Unfortunately, the execution was terrible and left a lot of students wondering what exactly they were even supposed to be watching.
Visibility was only one issue. From the student section, even from the highest seats in the stadium, every image was cut off.
From “You Got This” looking like “You” from the student section to the highest seats not even seeing the full images, no one could see a thing. And imagine being the students in the SH-SA sections? They could only watch on the jumbotron.

On top of that, the lights weren’t dimmed, making it hard to see even with a clear view.
Drone shows have been on the rise, with plenty of great examples at football games. Even a Big Ten rival, Washington, had a better drone show where folks could clearly tell what was being displayed.
Instead, Penn State displayed a few rectangles for a while, which left the crowd confused, then put up an image of what was supposed to be Beaver Stadium after a few confusing outlines.
The worst of all was the Nittany Lion doing his infamous push-ups. While some figured it out immediately, plenty of students argued over what it was, and many ended up concluding it was a turkey.
A Thanksgiving turkey.
So Penn State, we are begging you to make the Nittany Lion look a little less like something that would be carved up in November, and maybe something more ferocious and win-worthy.
Now, to be fair, the idea of a drone show isn’t the problem; it was really just the execution. So there has to be a way to make the next one better.
First, the designs absolutely need to be bigger and clearer. Beaver Stadium is enormous; that’s one of the claims to fame, so a display that looks detailed and impressive from far away may not translate to the thousands of fans sitting closer.
A recognizable Nittany Lion head, a giant Penn State logo (used in the show!), or other 2D shapes are safer bets that won’t leave the student section scratching their heads.
Second, test the display from different parts of the stadium beforehand. If it can’t be seen in the least ideal section, there should be a solution rather than sacrificing those sections.
Finally, give us something worth looking at. Big games are already a spectacle, and a drone show should add to the experience instead of turning it into a guessing game.
Penn State has some of the best traditions in college football, so nobody is asking the university to reinvent the White Out, but if something new is going to be introduced, it should be worth the effort.
We want the drone show to succeed, especially if the game is disappointing; it’s a great way to boost morale.
Don’t give the students something else to laugh about!
